Hi,
I have some (last) problems with my usb wireless, a D-Link DWL-122. After trying for nearly one year, I get it working with WEP (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-427730-highlight-bjosch.html)! But now, after every boot I have to start it manually. The main problem would not be to write a script for it, but I have to unplug and replug it before it works. If I don't do that:
Code:
Aemilia bjosch # /etc/init.d/wlan start
 * Starting WLAN devices ...
Error: Device wlan0 does not seem to be present.
Make sure you've inserted the appropriate
modules or that your modules.conf file contains
the appropriate aliase(s).
wlanctl-ng: No such device
wlanctl-ng: No such device
error: Autojoin indicated failure!

Only if I unplug it and after replugging it, it works fine:
Code:
Aemilia bjosch # /etc/init.d/wlan start
 * Starting WLAN devices ...
message=lnxreq_ifstate
  ifstate=fwload
  resultcode=success
Reading S-record file /lib/firmware/prism2_ru.hex...

Aemilia bjosch # dhcpcd wlan0

The error messages are a bit irritating, but at least it works. I thought about adding it to the boot process and so did
Code:
rc-update add wlan default

but maybe it got confused because with net.eth, also present in the default run level. So I deleted BOTH of them and added only ifplugd that's working behind. I wished, the box would see automatically if it is connected by lan, wireless or not at all. And that if by wireless, wireless might be up at boot time! Can anybody help me with that issue? Thanks for comments.

just get rif of wlan-ng and use hostap or orinico.. You can use gentoo wireless configuration via wireless-tools then which makes life much easier.. For orinoco use the development version, the older is not supporting usb devices

Thanks. But does orinoco support prism2-based cards? I thought only orinoco-based! I preferred to keep wlan-ng now I got it working... Is there no way with this configuration?

yes orinoco and hostap supports prism based cards.. You could get it working with wlan-ng, but I promise it's much nicer intrfrated with wirelss-tools, and they are not supported by wlan.ng. If you use baselayout>=1.12 wirelss support is embeded in gentoo via /etc/conf.d/wireless (which uses wirless-tools). works like a charm
