hello.

i do not know what to do.
a few days ago i did emerge --sync.
afterwards a emerge -uDp world tolds me that i have a blocking-problem.
xorg-server > 1.0.99 is blocking the current (properitary) ati driver.
i thought okay, today is a good day for switching to the xorg driver.
the results are very poor, but i do not really know why.
the driver should support my card (ati firegl x1 ng).
anyway the results are poor.

does anybody know what to do?
using the driver from ati is not possible (without hacks or downgrades),
using the driver from xorg results in very poor performance.

maybe i do something wrong?
kind regards

same deal with the nVidia driver here .. i lurked a bit in the irc channel and listened to people upgrading, and decided i could do without the xorg upgrade till the new "corrected" drivers are released..
if you wish to get your performance back, i would suggest downgrading to the previous version of xorg ..
just my $0.02

okay, thanks for the hint!
i will maybe do that
but, do you have an idea why the xorg driver does not work with my card?
in the log file of x.org there is a listing with supported cards where mine is listed

alex.blackbit,

Xorg 7.1 has changed its ABI (Application Binary Interface) so none of the binary drivers work with it.
If you need 3D acceleration, you need to stay with Xorg 7.0 and less.

i am guessing here but i would think the poor performance is due to the open drivers not providing hardware acceleration .. which would mean poor performance in your case i guess ..

8O
really? if i get you right, the driver from xorg does not support hardware acceleration at all?
in that case i had completely wrong things in mind.
will i never get any reasonable performance out of the xorg driver?
have i to be glad that i see my desktop in more that 640x480 on my screen with that driver?

i am quite confused now...

alex.blackbit,

The xorg drivers provide 2D acceleration but its not as good as the acceleration provided by the binary drivers.
Unfortunately, neither ATI or nVidia provide hardware interface definitions for their graphics chips any more, which makes writing drivers very difficult.
