After finally geting the fglrx to work with my system and finally having 3d acceleration, I broke my system with an upgrade to 7.1 so that I could experiment with XGL. X seems to start without a hithch, but hangs my system without warning... Here is the output from my Xorg log (condensed)

Code:

Hi,

Two things -- Xgl works just fine with 7.0. And there are problems with binary nvidia and ati drivers under xorg-server 1.1.0 (part of xorg-x11 7.1). See this sticky thread for details. Different people have run into everything from X not starting to weird font problems under 7.1.

Ok, so I got X to start, but without acceleration. I know there are plenty of people running xgl with radeon cards, so I have to imagine I can get this to work. On a side note, how can I be sure xgl/compiz is installed? I find NOTHING on my system when I do a locate compiz. Is this normal, or are there additional packages that need to be installed? Any idea on why the log shows that DRI loaded fine, and then it said it wasnt loaded?

Thanks again

While the latest xorg-server has the capability of building xglx as well as the regular xorg-server, you can't yet get Xgl that way. Here is the XGL Howto from the Gentoo wiki. Follow the steps there to get Xgl up and running.

You will not get acceleration with the binary ati drivers and the latest xorg-server -- see the thread I posted above.

Thanks for the link, I can't believe I didn't stumble across it earlier.

Just to clarify, I am using the mesa radeon driver. Is this the ati binary? Before the upgrade I was using the official ati fglrx, but now I am using the radeon driver that was comiled with x11.. If I use this, does that still mean I can have no hardware acceleration?

Thanks for your patience, I am not a newbie to linux, but I know nothing about X

Ah, I misunderstood. fglrx is the binary driver, I didn't realize you were using the open source radeon driver instead -- I should have read your log output more carefully. That should work just fine with 7.1. But do check the hardware support section of the Xgl Howto.

Moved from Desktop Environments to Unsupported Software, XGL questions go to US.

Ok, so im getting closer (I think) but when I try to build mesa with the xgl-coffee overlay, i get this error. I re-installed libdrm per the tutorial, but this did not fix the problem. What am I doing wrong here?

What did it say above the first line you posted? That line indicates make has detected a failed compile, but it doesn't give the actual compiler error messages that would provide a clue about this.

Sorry about that,

radeon_context.c: In function `radeonGetString`:
radeon_context.c:105: error: `RADEON_CARD_PCI' undeclared (first use in this function)
radeon_context.c:105: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
radeon_context.c:105: error: for each function it appears in.)

Thanks again for all the help! :D

No problem. :)

Were there any errors above that regarding missing header (.h) files? If so, could you post those lines? Also, could you post the output of "emerge --info" and "emerge -pv mesa"?

And because it is so long, here is a link to everything that spit out stderr while building (attempting to build) mesa.

Hey, thanks again, im almost tempted to find out where you are in massachusetts and give you money. Except for the part where I have none. but thanks!

This is not good:
Code:
cannot find include file "stddef.h
over and over.

Assuming you do have that header, a quick and dirty workaround would be to symlink it to where mesa expects to find it:
Code:
ln -s /usr/include/linux/stddef.h /usr/include/stddef.h

Then try again. If you don't have it, that's a different problem. And I don't know why it's not being found anyway as it should be in several well-known locations. But that is yet a different problem.

Then there's this from emerge --info:
Code:
gcc-20050130, glibc-2.3.4.20041102-r1

These are not portage versions, yes? What version of gcc is that based on? I would highly recommend using gcc 4.1.1 and glibc 2.4-r3 from portage rather than non-standard gcc/glibc. I assume you know what you have to do to update.

You're very welcome, this is what the Gentoo community is all about! :) Now if you have some Windows problems, then we can talk about money. :lol:

I created the symlink (which didnt fix the issue, although Im sure it fixed part of it) and tried to update gcc with NO luck. I think you've hit something here. My system is horribly broken, and even though it's a windows-ish approach to fixing things, I think I might just grab the new gentoo 2006 iso and start from scratch. Here is what happens when I try to emerge gcc, eselect-compiler, or anything of the like:

Code:
>>> Emerging (1 of 5) app-admin/eselect-compiler-2.0.0_rc1-r6 to /
>>> checking ebuild checksums ;-)
>>> checking auxfile checksums ;-)
>>> checking miscfile checksums ;-)
>>> checking compiler-config-2.0.0_rc1.tar.gz ;-)
grep: //etc/eselect/compiler/*.conf: No such file or directory
grep: //etc/eselect/compiler/*.conf: No such file or directory
grep: //etc/eselect/compiler/*.conf: No such file or directory
grep: //etc/eselect/compiler/*.conf: No such file or directory
 * We weren't able to find a valid eselect compiler profile for default.
 * Please do the following to re-emerge gcc, then retry emerging
 * eselect-compiler:
 * # emerge -v --oneshot sys-devel/gcc

!!! ERROR: app-admin/eselect-compiler-2.0.0_rc1-r6 failed.
Call stack:
  ebuild.sh, line 1555:   Called dyn_setup
  ebuild.sh, line 668:   Called pkg_setup
  eselect-compiler-2.0.0_rc1-r6.ebuild, line 36:   Called die

!!! Missing eselect-compiler profile for default

There are plenty of more problems. It seems like I have no png support, even though I reinstalled libpng, when I launch a kde app, the bouncing icon has a white box around it. I reinstalled kdelibs as well, and this did not fix it. I have 5 other linux servers, 2 gentoo, 2 slackware, and a sun sparcstation running debian (none of which are running X) and I never have a problem with them. Maybe I should just stay away from X!!

And as far as supporting windows, I work full time when Im not in college for a tech provider supporting windows which could be part of why i cant stand it! :lol:

Thanks again for all of your help
