PostPosted: Sat Jun 10, 2006 4:43 am    Post subject: Konqueror konqs out on www.microsoft.com (is this a joke!!?) Reply with quote

I'm running konqueror 3.5.3. When I browse to www.microsoft.com (yes - some people still do this occasionally), all of my konq windows shut down.

I've just done the same thing with konq 3.5.2 on Gentoo and Ubuntu and have had the same response. I get the crash handler in ubuntu (maybe I haven't got it installed on gentoo). I don't have a problem with firefox.

Is this saboage on the part of the konq devs, or M$?

[EDIT] I've fixed it by changing my browser identification to Explorer 6.0 on Win XP. I'd still like to know why this happens.

Very odd since I don't have the problem (with 3.5.3) and my browser ID string says it's Konqueror.

They probably just don't like you.

Strange - it happens on 3 machines. I use a proxy for all of them. Maybe thats the problem.

Hahah, it happens here too. I'm not behind any proxy, but konqueror surely crashes when enterin www.microsoft.com . Odd, very odd.

Ok, I'm now trying with IE6 identification. Let's see if it works... and no. I tried to set up an identification for www.microsoft.com and microsoft.com and browsed there but Konqueror still crashed.
Ok so, does microsoft.com have some "killer-code" or is Konqueror's developers joking around? Konqueror doesn't crash on jfb3, so are we (I and Robert S) missing something? Odd, very odd...

Ok, I think it's time to report a bug. If this happens in Ubuntu and Gentoo, the reason must be Konqueror itself. So bugs.kde.org ->

Looks like its being attended to http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=128595

I wonder if this is a M$ "bomb"? I've never seen konq crash on a page like this before.

Ah, thank you. I'll start monitoring that bug then.

It happens for me too, but actually, I find it very hard to think Microsoft has the time to find and exploit bugs in Konqueror.

The really bad thing is the web developers - why can't they just stick to the standards? Why is there a need for ActiveX on every page, or 15025399013958109 Flash ads, or Java applets and so on?

But even though the internet is getting more and more polluted, Konqueror should not die when it tries to navigate it.

Doesn't crash me (3.5.3) but the CSS is all screwy. Probably because they hacked it to work on internet explorer, but since konqueror understands CSS it looks the way it was programmed.

It crashes for me too. Konqueror 3.5.2. I'll upgrade to 3.5.3 and see if still happens.

this is very odd, though. reminds me of konqueror from a few years ago

no crash here konq 3.5.3 on kde 3.5.3

Code:
# emerge konqueror

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies  ... done!
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/konqueror-3.5.3  USE="java kdeenablefinal -arts -debug -kdehiddenvisibility -xinerama"

Crashes too here (v 3.5.2) :D i think it's a problem of the 3.5.2 version and has seemingly been fixed in 3.5.3

i think i won't upgrade, i like that security-mechanism

I have 3.5.3 and it killed mine too. It may be something to do with what is compiled in:

Code:
root@smoker / # emerge -pv konqueror

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/konqueror-3.5.3  USE="arts java -debug -kdeenablefinal -kdehiddenvisibility -xinerama" 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB
root@smoker / #

Anybody notice something different or common to ones that crash??

:D :D :D :D

I tried it in Mozilla. It doesn't freeze or anything but when I click
an item on the menu at left nothing happens.
I guess the site knows it is not a Wndows OS browsing it.
At the top there is some graphics (I think) but it doesn't open.
