I don't know, I don't worry about it since I never use this heavily (<- is this english ? I wonder if ... ) so I don't care about it.
It could be interesting to post this on compiz.net, I think someone can maybe code something, but if you choose to have a cube with 32 desktop, it could be hard to see something |

Thanks a bunch. I know some of these questions were kind of dumb/easy to find in the documentation, but it's hard to find the documentation when you're busy watching the cube spinning around...
One last question (for the next five minutes at least, heh).
KDE thinks everything is on one desktop now...is there anyway around this, or is it something I just have to deal with? It's not a bug, I think, but it's more just how I tend to use my computer. I can learn to adapt, but I figure if there's a solution to that...no need to adapt. |
I don't think there is a solution. The problem lies with the fact that KDE doesn't detect compiz, and cannot link into it for that applet. |

Oh well, it's something I'll learn to deal with.
I'm guessing it's silly to hope for this to be implemented any time soon, correct? And no, I'm not nearly talented enough to jump in and start coding myself, though this is neat enough to kind of make me want to learn some about OpenGL programming... |

it worked for me by
un emerge kxdocker and clear out all kxdocker data
then re emerge kxdocker-1.1.4a-r1 _________________ Core i7 920 D0 | Asus P6T DLX | Patriot Viper 1600 6GB | Antec Quattro 850W

Thanks Jupiter,
I did a
Code: | emerge -Ca kxdocker |
And deleted the kxdocker directories in share and home. Then I
Code: | emerge -av kde-misc/kxdocker-1.1.4a | (no version 1.1.4a-r1 available)
But still see the border. Any other thoughts? |

I was using layman for the overlay, when I did it manually, it came right up. |

Ok, one more question for tonight (I did go out for a while, I wasn't staring at the wobbly windows forever :p).
I also use MythTV, which doesn't play so well with Xgl. I've foudn by passing NO_XV=1 to mythfrontend, it works, but it's kind of slow.
I've seen for games there's the xgame package, which I assume you run "xgame <game binary>" and it will automatically open up a new X server, switch displays, and switch back when done. Would something like this work for MythTV? While I'm watching tv I don't really need to have fancy cube desktop switches, although eventually to have everything working together correctly, that'd be kind of neat.
If that doesn't work, is there some nice, clean way I can use my remote control (with LIRC) to run a script that would do essentially that? I know that's a bit off topic, but I figure somone else may find it useful as well. |

I don't use MythTV or xgame, but when I want to watch video and get decent performance under Xgl, I run the player on the underlying X server: Code: | DISPLAY=:94 gmplayer |
I run Xgl on DISPLAY :1 -- if you use :0, then you would use "DISPLAY=:93" in the above command. |

That's mroe or less exactly what I'm looking to do, except it doesn't seem to work.
Forgive the stupid question, but why is it display 93 or 94, and not 0 or 1?
I get the error:
Code: |
Xlib: connection to ":93.0" refused by server :93
Xlib: No protocol specified
mythfrontend: cannont connect to X server :93

Sorry, I forgot to mention an important item -- you have to turn off access restrictions to the underlying server, or only root will be able to use this method. It's done by passing "-xorgAc" to Xgl on startup, so whatever method you use to start Xgl, you have to include that flag on the Xgl command line. I use gdm to run Xgl, and my command line in custom.conf looks like this: Code: | command=/usr/bin/Xgl :1 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv -xorgAc |
The current implementation of Xgl requires the normal xorg-server to be running as well, and it has to be running on a different display -- although I don't know why those display numbers in particular. xorg-server is running on DISPLAY :93 or :94 while Xgl is running on :0 or :1. If you're interested, this web page does a pretty good job of explaining how the pieces all fit together. |

Well, that did exactly what I wanted to get mythfrontend working, but once I exited mythfrontend, it seems as if my keyboard is not working. I can't type in X at all, or use any short cuts.
This is rather odd behavior, but I suppose to be expected for software like this, heh. |

Yes, as cool as this all looks and works, we're still in very early days. I think by the end of this year, we'll be looking at a more stable and better integrated experience -- with Xegl replacing the current patchwork of xorg-server+Xgl, and with Gnome and KDE having more compositing-aware applications, things will really start to take off. |

Damn...is it next year yet then? :p
I did some basic testing, it looks like X, not sure if it's Xgl or what, gets hosed after running mythfrontend on Display 93.
Using mplayer though, and it seems like it's ok after I close the application. I'm...rather confused by this behavior, and I'm hoping someone might have had a similar experience? |

Hey guys, just trying to get some Xgl goodness, I use a Nvidia fx5200, I have xorg7 from stable, and running Xgl, with revision 285 of portage-xgl.
when I try anything with Xgl, ie run it as follows:
Code: |
doram@mythmonster ~ $ Xgl :1 -ac -accel xv -accel glx:pbuffer
|
that is all I get, no errors, no goodness, just cursor
any bright ideas? |

You need Compiz, I think, to run after you start Xgl. Starting Xgl is like just starting X, all you'll get is the cursor on a checkered background. I followed the below link to get mine working, had absolutely no problems (surprised me how easy it was, actually).

With compiz-quinnstorm-0.0.13.11 I have white outlines on all my windows, and trying to revert back to .9 does not work, it will not compile... _________________ Dont make it idiot proof, make it work.

It might be part of the new decoration stuff.. Quinn included a patch (I think she wrote it) that adds basic theming support to compiz. |

What I meant was it could just be a plugin setting.. Not necessarily a problem. |

If you haven't already done so, try emerging x11-misc/gcompizthemer. Then try selecting different themes to see if the outline changes. It sounds like what you are seeing is the new "halo" effect (separate from the drop shadows) the color and size of which can be changed with gcompizthemer. |

Been there done that.... I am not the only one who has noticed this.... look back about 10-12 posts.
I have played with gcompizthemer and gset-compiz and gconf-editor. the white outline is still there. _________________ Dont make it idiot proof, make it work.
