What version of gcc are most using for XGL & compiz? I wanted to move to 4.1.1 (for a x86 machine), but wanted to make sure that there were not any major problems with XGL & compiz first!

Hey
I have a rather strange question; the gentoo box I want to get xgl running on has no internet connection. I download all the stuff from another machine with "emerge -pfv". When I want to emerge xgl, it wants to go off and download some stuff from a subversion server. Is there a way I could get that stuff from another machine so I can emerge it locally?
Would getting a kororaa live cd and then doing quickpkg xgl, and then transferring the xgl package to my machine work?
P.S: I posted this question in xgl (part4) but since it was right at the end of it, I thought I'd repost it here, is that alright? |

I'm running 4.1.1 on an amd64 system and have had no problems related to gcc with Xgl/Compiz. In fact, I've only built Xgl with 4.1.x as I upgraded to 4.1.0 a week before starting to use Xgl back in March. |

The order didn't make any difference (why can't i add miniwin, transset, state, trailfocus and bs plugins?? Aren't they supporded from compiz-vanilla or something? ).
I guess i'll try quinnstorm then . Emerging latest version right now, will be back with more details...
Êþäéêáò:
hydra portage-xgl # emerge -av xgl compiz-quinnstorm
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!

[ebuild N ] x11-wm/compiz-quinnstorm-0.0.13.0-r1 USE="gnome svg -debug" 533 kB [2]
|
All ok now, the problem with the switcher plugin is solved with x11-wm/compiz-quinnstorm-0.0.13.0-r1 All kde apps are behaving good again.

hmm... what is wrong with dbus and quinnstorm?
Êþäéêáò:
hydra ~ # /etc/init.d/dbus start
* Starting D-BUS system messagebus ... [ ok ]
hydra ~ # LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ DISPLAY=:1 compiz --replace gconf
compiz: Connection Error (Unable to determine the address of the message bus)
compiz: Couldn't initiate D-BUS connection
compiz: Disabling D-BUS Service
Finishing dbusSegmentation fault
compiz doesn't load at all...
I dont have dbus in my use flags, but have dbus (and ivman) installed.
Êþäéêáò:
hydra ~ # emerge -va dbus ivman
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] sys-apps/dbus-0.60-r4 USE="X doc gtk python qt -debug -gcj -mono -xml" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] sys-apps/ivman-0.6.8 USE="-debug" 0 kB
Total size of downloads: 0 kB
Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

Ok, problem solved using the line
Code: | LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib dbus-launch --auto-syntax compiz --replace gconf& |
at my Xstartup (using kdm) -of course dbus is running.
This is also solved as kmare suggested using something like:
Code: | LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib compiz --disable-dbus --replace gconf& |

Everyone, sorry about the missing compiz-quinnstorm tarball. My automatic upload script failed for that.. Please use compiz-quinnstorm-0.0.13.2 to fix your .13.0 dbus issue.. (The tarball is now uploaded manually) |

I've been wondering about this for awhile, why is it when I start Xgl using the startxgl script it starts but stays at the normal grey X screen for ages before starting the DM I selected (in my cases KDE).
Also has anyone had any sucess with GDM with the latest overlay?, it was working great for me with Xgl and I could start kde with it just fine, now it will start stay at the grey X screen with the watch icon the middle then it will crash and not restart X like it used to.
Any ideas? _________________ Admiral Trigger Happy

Trigger, it's supposed to wait 2 seconds after starting XGL to start your DE (Desktop Environment). I think you need to manually configure gdm to wait longer before starting the xgl/compiz/DE.. The patch that forced it was included into the latest gdm so you can configure it instead of it being forced. |

I did that, the werid thing is it waits longer than 2 seconds, its quite some time before it crashes the werid thing is it worked fine before I updated about a week ago, also I got it to work yesterday once, but then it stopped working again. _________________ Admiral Trigger Happy

I'm using compiz-quinnstorm-9999 and I updated it yesterday I think, maybe the day before.
Compiz is running great (still won't connect to DBUS, but it starts fine now) and if I use the startxgl script its starts fine, its just sits at the blank screen for some time before it brings up the KDE splash screen, and it doesn't load compiz until KDE load the window manager and then the background pic comes in.
I just did some playing around with GDM and KDM, I can get KDM to start with XGL but I can't interact with it with the keyboard or the mouse, I can move the mouse but nothing responds.
I also increased the timeout for GDM to 35 from 25 and it seems to work better now, but only on the first shot, if X or Xgl crashes GDM won't come up on its auto restart properly and I have to kill it and try again, which normally works. _________________ Admiral Trigger Happy

Hi All,
I am trying to get XGL installed. I am following the Wiki {dated May 30, 2006}
And I get stuck at the subversion section.
Here is my post"
This doesn't work for me.. I get an error
<root /usr/local/overlays>
$ svn co http://svn.xgl-coffee.org/xgl-coffee/trunk portage-xgl
svn: REPORT request failed on '/xgl-coffee/!svn/vcc/default'
svn: REPORT of '/xgl-coffee/!svn/vcc/default': 400 Bad Request (http://svn.xgl-coffee.org)
With 'layman'
$ layman -a portage-xgl
* Running command "/usr/bin/svn co http://svn.xgl-coffee.org/xgl-coffee/trunk// /usr/portage/local/layman/portage-xgl"...
svn: REPORT request failed on '/xgl-coffee/!svn/vcc/default'
svn: REPORT of '/xgl-coffee/!svn/vcc/default': 400 Bad Request (http://svn.xgl-coffee.org)
* Failed to add overlay "portage-xgl".
* Error was: Adding the overlay failed!
Any ideas?
Any one else getting this error? Any information/direction would be most
helpful.
Thanks,
Tim... _________________ Where there is a will there is a way!

Sounds like you are going through a HTTP proxy, doesn't work through a proxy.
It may be a transparent proxy, contact your ISP or system admin, or if you have your own firewall box check to see it doesn't have a transparent proxy on _________________ Admiral Trigger Happy

Heya Admiral
I had similar problems when i added the "neg" plugin
I am using GDM with 25 second delay, compiz-quinnstorm-9999
sometimes KDE splash is black and system is slow to finish
drawing DE, the neg plugin works but sometimes no keyboard
and when clicking somewhere "highlight a key in gconf" change
won't happen till i grab title bar and move the window a little bit
i removed neg plugin and all seems ok now _________________ Core i7 920 D0 | Asus P6T DLX | Patriot Viper 1600 6GB | Antec Quattro 850W

Alrighty, I've got another problem. I finally got XGL to work with Gnome. The only problem is minimize. Whenever I minimize a window it goes down to that dock thing. When I bring it back up (the only way I've figured out to do that is to right click), the window cannot be used (like if it is a terminal I can't type in the terminal). When I close the program (such as the terminal) then not only does the terminal close but so does compiz. I've got to re-run compizrc in order to get everything back up. Although this is minor, I'd sure love to be able to minimize windows. I'm also getting random lockups moving windows around. |

I haven't followed the Xgl development for a while (my last install was made with ebuilds dated april) and I would like a quick update on XVideo support.
Has it been implemented completely? I'd love to switch to Xgl, but I also use my pc as tv and MythTV only runs with xv or shared memory (which has terrible performance).
Thank you! |

Alright, now when it minimizes I can't see the windows anymore. And I never had a dock plugin loaded. |

I've had compiz (quinnstorm) and Xgl compiling fine for quite a while, but most of the plugins seem to fail silently. There are no window decorations (while gnome-window-decorator is running), alt-tab doesn't work, water doesn't work... I can make windows transparent with alt-scroll and I can drag the cube and switch desktops. Window focusing is kinda weird, it's unpredictable when it will focus in the window when I click and when it will try to move the window instead (wobbly moving does work).
Any ideas, anyone? |

I'm getting some screen drawing issues with compiz-quinnstorm-9999
Certain apps, azureus, firefox and even konqueror don't redraw properly now, this only started happening recently, I have reemerged compiz but I think the bug hasn't been fixed yet.
The problem appears mostly after minimising and then restoring, also moving.
I will disable a couple of the plugins that are related and report of my success, but for now its not working.
EDIT: I think I found the problem, I think it was the neg plugin, I forgot it was enabled, as it wasn't doing anything at all, except possibly causing me screen redraw issues. _________________ Admiral Trigger Happy

I've just got a quick question about kdelibs on the CoffeeBuzz overlay. Portage wants to upgrade kdelibs to 3.5.3. Previously, the overlay has had a patched version of kdelibs in the overlay. The only version of kdelibs in the overlay at the moment is 3.5.2-r6. Does anyone know if kdelibs 3.5.3 requires patching for xgl? or when a patched version of kdelibs might be available? _________________ Cheers
