Hi,
I'm trying to use an usb2 external harddrive but I just realise that USB2 doesen't work on my notebook, only USB1.
As a result, transfer rates are too slow to make the harddrive really usable:
'hdparm -t /dev/sdb'
Code: |
/dev/sdb:
Timing buffered disk reads: 4 MB in 4.32 seconds = 947.60 kB/sec
|
Here is what lspci shows:
Code: |
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 04)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM Express PCI Express Root Port (rev 04)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #1 (rev 04)
00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #2 (rev 04)
00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #3 (rev 04)
00:1d.3 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #4 (rev 04)
00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev d4)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 04)
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) SATA Controller (rev 04)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 04)
01:03.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1410 PC card Cardbus Controller (rev 02)
01:07.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG (rev 05)
01:0a.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB43AB22/A IEEE-1394a-2000 Controller (PHY/Link)
01:0c.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce Go 6600] (rev a2)
|
As you can see, the EHCI controller is not even recognised. there should be a line like this one :
Code: |
00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 04)
|
Does anyone has an idea as to why it doesn't work ? |

If a PCI device doesn't appear at all in lspci, it usually means the BIOS disabled it. So check in the BIOS if you don't have an option to select between "EHCI" and "UHCI" or between "USB 2.0" and "USB 1.1". |

Thanks widan.
I checked my BIOS but there was no "visible" option related to USB.
However, I got the solution from someone on the Uniwill forum.
Apprently it is an "hidden" option that got somehow disabled.
I did a "Load optimized default" and - while in appearence there was no change on the BIOS screens - EHCI was detected at the next boot. |
