Hi!
I have some trouble with gconf-"stuff"
No gnome-apps work anymore.
This is the funny error-message:
Failed to launch configuration server: Failed to execute child process "/var/tmp/portage/gconf-2.2.0/image//usr/libexec/gconfd-2" (No such file or directory)
I deleted all $home/.gconf -stuff and /var/tmp/* and remerged gconf and gnome-session, but this (guess what) didnt help (not that i think i did something intelligent).
I have no clue about this stuff, can anyone tell a dumb person (yes im pretty dumb) what to do?
oh and btw.. same error for root which seems odd because i only played around with the user's config.
thx in advance |

What versions of portage and gconf do you have installed?
Have you synced up your tree recently?
What happens when you start up a regular Xsession and run gconfd?
The errors indicate that gconf thinks it is in the directory where portage built it but not on the system. |

hi and thx for your reply.
im running latest gentoo unstable, which is
portage 2.0.47-r10 and
gconf-2.2.0
syncing up my tree every day
locate gconfd shows me
/usr/bin/gconfd-1
/usr/libexec/gconfd-2
but gconfd-1 is no longer there, for some reason it disappeared.
there is no gconfd* in my path.
is this looking like an easy answer for the cause of the problem?
Maybe gconfd-1 is in another place now, lets see:
Nope, no gconfd-1 on the whole /
Well.. ill just copy one from a a few days old /-backup and see what happens then.
hmm... i cant run the copied gconfd-1 because of a error with shared libraries libconf-something not found.
But.. but.. i remerged gconf several times!! |

If you just ran
then you would have remerged gconf-2.2.0 when what you need to merge is gconfd-1.0.8
Code: |
cd /usr/portage/gnome-base/gconf
emerge gconf-1.0.8-r4.ebuild
|
should do the trick. |

ok i emerged gconf-1.
When i start gcfond-1 before, im getting rid of the error, but there come lots of new errors like "CORBA blablabla cannot connect to configuration server /var/tmp/blablabla".
That specific corba-error can be found on other threads, but what helped there doesnt help me. |

It sounds like your gnome1 tree may have messed up.
Code: |
emerge -ep gconf-1.0.8
emerge -e gconf-1.0.8

no change.
i can spawn gconfd-1, but not gconfd-2
If i spawn gconfd-1 all the fonts of gtk2 apps disappear, but maybe this is normal cause gconfd-2 should do this.
If i try to spawn gconfd-2 i get still the error:
Failed to spawn the config server (gconfd): Failed to launch configuration
server: Failed to execute child process "/var/tmp/portage/gconf-2.2.0/image//usr/libexec/gconfd-2" (No such file or
directory)
same error when i not try to spawn anything before launching a gnome-app. |
