hi,
am installing gentoo 2006.0 from the live cd but installation failed a couple of time,
one of the problems is that the network configuration wasnt successful,
when ever i try to ping a host in the same network i get a destination host unreachable.
the configuration is:

eth 0 : ip address 172.17.64.200 , mask : 255.255.255.0 , gateway: 172.17.64.1
i also set up an http proxy, and DNS server and am definetly sure from the configurations coz all hosts in the network have similar information.

running the ifconfig, things seem normal, i can also ping the local host ip 172.17.64.200 normally

can any one help in this regard please,

thanks in advance,
sosoisl

sosoisl,

Welcome to Gentoo.

Do you have more than one ethX device listed in
Code:
ifconfig -a
If so, gentoo may not be using eth0.
Also, Gentoo does not detect all 1Gb interfaces correctly, so you need to help it sometimes.
Run the
Code:
lspci
and post any output lines that show they are Ethernet.

first of all i repeated the same configurations for eth1 and eth2 and still my problem not solved.(how can i know what interface gentoo is to use)

Regarding the 1Gb card not being fully recognized ,running lspci i got the following Ethernet entries:

02.05.0 Ethernet Controller Intel Corporation 82546EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 01)
02.05.1 Ethernet Controller Intel Corporation 82546EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 01)
03.07.0 Ethernet Controller Intel Corporation 825461GI/PI Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 05)

and know am stuck again,

thanks again,

sosoisl

sosoisl,

All of your network interfaces need the e1000 module.

Run
Code:
ifconfig -a
you should have eth0, eth1, eth2 and maybe others.
If these interfaces are misssing, run
Code:
modprobe e1000
to manually load the module and check again.

To fix ethX names to interfaces requires that you write udev rules. There is no point in doing that until you own install is running. Meanwhile, use trial and error with the
Code:
net-setup ethX
command.
The interface names may change from boot to boot, which is a pain but in your own install you can fix that.
