|

Hi.
I'm having some trouble with sound on my laptop. Basically I have ALSA working almost perfectly with the CS46xx driver (my microphone doesn't work, but that's a seperate problem I think) until I suspend my computer using APM, when the sound just dies. It stays that way until I reboot my computer completely. I've tried restarting just the alsa service (via /etc/init.d/alsasound stop/start), but all that returns is a bunch of "Device or resource busy errors" after which the start script allways returns "* ALSA driver is already running." and the stop script returns "* ERROR: "alsasound" has not yet been started." The sound modules are all still loaded, and if I try removing them manually with rmmod I get the same "Device or resource busy" error.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong? It's clearly not a major problem because a simple reboot allways restores everything back to normal, but it is still irritating not being able to fix it.
Any help would be much appreciated. |

From what I read it is a case of the bios not playing nice with apm and ASLA drivers.
Sorry I don't know of a fix. I am just getting started with Linux and laptops.
People report that using the OSS drivers solves this problem. You can try the drivers for free (time trial) and purchase them if you feel they are worth while.
What I have read is that some laptops have/use hibernation partitions. These appear as empty disk space at the end of the hard drive and often get blown away during partitioning.
Anyway restoring these partions sometimes helps apm problems. |

Hmmm. I guess this is as good an excuse as any to finally get hibernation working. I gave up the last time I tried because the utilities I would need to use are dos-based, and my laptop only has linux on it. I've heard about people using a Freedos ISO to make a bootable CD for this kind of thing, so I might give that a try. It could take a while, but I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks. |
