|
|
Hi all,
This is my first post and I'm kinda new to Gentoo so go easy on me. Let me explain my set up first. I have my desktop which runs on an AMD 3500+ with 2GB of RAM that has Opensuse 10.1 and I have an Inspiron 6000 laptop that I am wanting to put Gentoo on. My question is can I get my desktop to compile things for my laptop and build binary packages that I could just move over to my laptop? Distcc is not an option because I take my laptop to work. I want my desktop to be compiling the big things like KDE and Xorg while I am at work. How would I go about doing this? Thanks in advance for the replies.

Thanks for the quick reply, kfiaciarka.
So, would I use a chroot environment to do what you are talking about?
Another quick question, I wouldn't mind installing Gentoo in xen on my desktop. Kind of a test system. The only problem with that though is my hardware does not support full virtualization. How can I get a kernel that can run in paravirtualization mode? Would I need to build it myself? This would actually solve my other question as well I think.

Yes, you can use a folder or a separate partition to chroot into it and install there gentoo. I've never used xen so I don;t know much about it. But You must know that xen has it't own kernel sources => xen-sources. (if I were you I wouldn't use any virtual machine to run linux, just separate partition:) for better performance and fun:)
Happy gentooing:) |
