I've had this problem on and off and each time it reoccurs, I can't seem to get it working with all the tricks I've learned on the forums. I'm sure it's all related to ATI, but I have to live with that for now.

Suddenly I'll lose my 3D without touching any settings or xorg.conf. Sometimes a single change will bring it back and at other times, nothing works. I lost 3d and changed TLS in xorg.conf to '2' and got 3d back. All worked for a day, then I hung on a black screen when running startx. Since then, I can't get 3d back and I hang many times on startx. I'm beginning to be afraid one of the fscks will fail and I'll lose the system. I then started getting an error (though I had not changed the kernel) saying the kernel version and driver version weren't matched. I rebuilt my kernel (changing nothing) and now I get an error complaining about the kernel config or something missing. I'm done a number of emerges for ati-drivers. If emerge update, it wants 8.25.18, then if I update again, it wants 8.23.7. I seemed to have more problems with 8.25.18 so I put it in package.mask and I'm now running 8.24.8. 3d seems to work best when at 8.23.7. Right now I can't get it to work at all.

Thanks. I checked out and followed both howtos. I still dont' have 3d though. When I did, I saw the correct info from /opt/ati/bin/fglrxinfo but so far after this time losing it, I can't seem to get it back.

I basically copy and pasted my xorg.conf from the x850 how to, then editted my mouse, keyboard, and monitor settings as they were from another xorg.conf that xorg has set up for me. I have great 3d performance.

Here is my xorg.conf... I have the dual screen setup commented out for now, since I'm still relying on windows for the time being (this is my work setup, and linux is not really a supported/approved desktop setup), and that my laptop is taking up my second monitor.

Also, make sure you have framebuffer support compiled in your kernel as well as agpgart as a module, as well as a module for your agp chipset (my MB has an intel chipset that there was no entry for in the kernel, so i left it out without any damage). Then, re-emerge ati-drivers if these were lacking (which could be, when an update world installed a new kernel version, it blew out my .config, and I had to reconfig my whole kernl).

Then, add the following to your /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

Code:

##Agpgard
agpgart

##mb chipset driver
#name of agp module here

#ATi
fglrx

Then, xorg.conf... Ignore the monitor sections unless you have 19" Dell Ultrasharp flatpanels.

Well, I followed the howtos again. and looked at your reply. At the moment, I cant' get back into X because everytime I execute startx, my system hangs on the first screen that follows the black screen, just before the cursor X would be drawn. In the past, this has been intermittent but not it's virtually 100%. I added the Option "notv" which is supposed to stop that, but it's still happening.

try a "modprobe fglrx" and see if the module even loads right.

If it doesn't download the installer from the ATI website and see if that works. That is how I fixed my issues.

I'm using 8.23.7 ati-drivers. In /var/log/messages, fglrx says 8.23.7 next to it. 'modprobe fglrx' does seem to work correctly and I see fglrx listed. Below are the lines I think relevant to this issue.

fglrx 450860 0
intel_agp 21276 0
agpgart 29388 2 fglrx,intel_agp

If you've made any kernel updates, you need to reinstall the ATi drivers, also, I had alot of problems with 8.18, and only slightly less with 8.24. 8.25.18 have worked great for me.

After googlling for a couple of hours last night, I've finally found something that seems to address the issue. There is apparently a bug in ATI dirivers (supposedly fixed in 8.16.20.1) that causes a hang black screen at startx if you have more than 768M memory. The suggested work-around is to add 'mem=768m' to your kernel line. I tried this and it does work 98% of the time. I've tried drivers from 8.18.6 all the way to the latest 8.26.18. Versions 8.16.20 and 8.16.20-r1 are both hard masked so I couldn't try them specifically and 8.16.20.1 is supposedly where the fix was introduced. I still have the problem with the latest drivers.

It's also suggested that running X the first time with no dri, then exiting and restarting X with dri enabled works, but that supposedly doesn't work with 2.6.* kernels; I'm using 2.6.16-gentoo-r7 so I haven't tried that yet. Does anyone have other updates ?

It's almost funny. I tried to resolve dri and direct rendering in order to be fast enough to play Dungeon Siege II in cedega [getting cedega working with it was just as much 'fun']. Now that I can get 3D with dri using the mem=768m on kernel, I'm using the ide0=noprobe so now I can't see my Dungeon Siege II CDOM :P , plus I'm wasting most of my 3G memory. If I go back to not using ide0=noprobe, I can see the DVD and CDROM-writer, but the system is much slower than if the ICH PCI bridge is correctly configured. Isn't that always the way !.

I tested and found that the reports are correct, at least for my system and setup. If I run full memory and remember to turn off dri by setting Option "no_dir" to "yes", exiecute startx, then ctrl-atl-backspace to kill the XServer, the reset Option "no_dir" to "no", and execute startx, it works properly 98% of the time. I've only had two lockups since I started doing this. I'm using 2.6.16-gentoor7 with 8.25.18 ati-drivers. At that point I have dri and 3d and get

Quote:

Odin ~ # glxinfo | grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes
Odin ~ # fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON X800 XT Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5814 (8.25.18)

Under that setup, cedega 5.2 hosts Dungeon Siege II pretty well, i.e. the performance is at least as good if not better than WinXP, which I no longer run on my machine. The only problem is mouse over events. When the cursor is over a selectable item or character, the whole screen is hightlighted instead of just the item and the hight light color may be blue or green or red. I can still see but it's pretty hairy in the middle of a fight.

I've played with turning on and off options but nothing seems to get rid of that problem. The game is playing with all game options set to the highest quality. I tried running everything at the lowest options but that did not solve the mouse over issue so I went back to the highest settings.

Just a quick update. 8.26.18 ati-drivers still exhibits the hang after startx problem. The only MOSTLY reliable solution is to use 8.23.7, and make sure the first startx is executed with the no_dri set to "yes" in xorg.conf. Next exit, the change no_dri to 'no', then startx will work with 3d enabled. I can then run games like Dungeon Seige 2 under Cedega. In Cedega, I have to use 5.0.3 to avoid mouse-over events hightlighting the entire screen. Any higher version of Cedega cause the whole screen to 'highlight' when the mouse moves over an object you can 'select'.
