PostPosted: Tue Jun 20, 2006 9:48 pm    Post subject: strange problems with my system Reply with quote

Since a few days I have some strange problems. I don't exactly know where to look for. The following is a list of symptoms I get:

  • starting xpdf lets X crash (it is reproducible)
  • sometimes when starting an application the screen is black for a moment and then everything is ok again.
  • when starting gnucash using LANG=de_CH I can't see some menus and some buttons are without text
  • on the numeric keypad the /*-+ keys don't work anymore (numbers are not affected). Right after logging on all the keys work as expected. I don't know when/why they are disabled.

Probably there are more symptoms which I haven't seen.

When starting xpdf the X server is terminated with ABRT. AFAIK this should create a core, but where is it located?
Code:

Jun 20 10:13:38 nc6120 entrance_login[31806]: Ending PAM session for user "tom".
Jun 20 10:13:40 nc6120 device eth0 left promiscuous mode
Jun 20 10:13:40 nc6120 bridge-eth0: disabled promiscuous mode
Jun 20 10:13:41 nc6120 entranced: The X server was terminated with signal 6.
Jun 20 10:13:43 nc6120 entranced: Attempting to restart X server.
Jun 20 10:13:45 nc6120 entranced: Successfully restarted the X server.
Jun 20 10:13:51 nc6120 entrance: Debug: ipc_title = /var/lib/entrance_ipc_31803
Jun 20 10:13:51 nc6120 entrance: entrance_ipc_init: Success
Jun 20 10:13:51 nc6120 entrance: Warning: No users found.
Jun 20 10:13:52 nc6120 (tom-31921): GConf server is not in use, shutting down.
Jun 20 10:13:52 nc6120 (tom-31921): Exiting
Jun 20 10:14:06 nc6120 entrance: entranced: Requesting auth for uid 1000 (/home/tom)
Jun 20 10:14:06 nc6120 entrance: Executing /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession
Jun 20 10:14:06 nc6120 entrance: entrance_ipc_shutdown: Success
Jun 20 10:14:06 nc6120 entrance: Starting session for user "tom".
Jun 20 10:15:28 nc6120 (tom-19454): starting (version 2.12.1), pid 19454 user 'tom'

Starting Gnucash with LANG=de_CH gives me many of the following errors:
Code:

tom@nc6120 ~ $ LANG=de_CH gnucash

** WARNING **: gnc_gnome_app_insert_menus: couldn't find insertion point for menus!

GnomeUI-CRITICAL **: file gnome-app-helper.c: line 640 (install_menuitem_hint_to_appbar): assertion `uiinfo->widget != NULL' failed.

** WARNING **: gnc_gnome_app_insert_menus: couldn't find insertion point for menus!

These errors don't appear when starting gnucash without setting LANG

Of course I haven't done anything ;-)
Before this the system run since several month without any such problems. It might be that it is related to an emerge -u world and a kernel upgrade which I run recently.

Some details about my system:
Hardware: HP Notebook NC 6120
Kernel: 2.6.16-gentoo-r9 #1 PREEMPT (I just copied the previous config file to the new one.). My kernel is almost monolithic. There are only a few modules which I can't compile into the kernel.
I run modular X with entrance and fluxbox as default login/window manager

I also booted some previous kernels and tried different xorg.conf files which worked fine before all with the same result.

Today I upgraded the following packages:
Code:

     Wed Jun 21 08:04:48 2006 >>> x11-libs/xtrans-1.0.0-r1
     Wed Jun 21 08:10:55 2006 >>> x11-libs/libX11-1.0.1-r1

     Wed Jun 21 08:12:16 2006 >>> x11-apps/xdm-1.0.4-r1
     Wed Jun 21 08:12:41 2006 >>> sys-apps/man-pages-2.33
     Wed Jun 21 08:22:44 2006 >>> app-office/gnucash-1.8.12
     Wed Jun 21 08:37:36 2006 >>> x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.0-r1
     Wed Jun 21 08:40:27 2006 >>> sys-apps/dbus-0.62

Still the same results.

is this just something that occurs on gnome?
do the applications just fizzle out and nothing works,
or does it cause the system to sieze up and stop alltogether.
the examples are gnome related. What about kde?

I don't run gnome. All my description belongs to fluxbox. I don't even have everything of gnome installed on the system. So I can't logon to a gnome session.

As there are several different problems I can't answer this question globally.
When starting xpdf my X-Server crashes.
When starting gnucash I just have some texts which I can't see (buttons, menu entries...).
Then there is another problem concerning my numeric keypad. Then I can't use the /*-+ keys anymore. Currently it is still working.

I now tried to logon into a kde session. At least the problem with the xpdf which is the most critical one is still there. So also when using kdm instead of xdm/entrance and logging on to kde instead of fluxbox the server crashes whenever I start xpdf.

We need a wee bit more information to give proper help ;)
Could you post the content of your ~/.xsession-errors?
Could you try starting X from the commandline, and see if it posts any errors (EE) and what it says when X crashes?

ok.in your home directory there SHOULD be a file .xsession-errors
Considering it brings the xserver down that would be a good place to start looking.
Hopefully it will lead you to the cause directly.
but then you can post it if it doesn´ t mean too much and myself and others can peruse it.

There is a folder called /var/log that has more logs.
I suggest you look through those and they should point to a cause of some disruption.
The common element seems to be settings for X, in the case of calc perhaps keyboard mappings.
Something else.
You could run xorgconfig and set or reset X settings,
could solve or lead towards solving the keys issue.
If you have not run that before (I have no idea) a good idea to read though the man page.
Just run from a console

man xorgconfig.

I''ve not used fluxbox much myself.

Hopefully that will lead towards something helpful

Hi,

same problem on my maschine. Searching the log's reveals a

Code:
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 8.  Server aborting

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
         at http://wiki.X.Org
 for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

*** If unresolved symbols were reported above, they might not
*** be the reason for the server aborting.

FatalError re-entered, aborting
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

from
Code:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

Any suggestions?

Running fluxbox on an athlonXP maschine. xpdf is at latest version 3.0.1-r8.

well yes,
you have picked up on looking at the logs in /var/log/
Its ouput tells very little more,
The file that is likely to be more informative is the other; ~/.xsession-errors
and the other that arkanoid previously suggested.
Try posting those and we might have a direction to follow.

the only errors in .xsession-errors i get are the following:
Code:

Eterm:  Error:  XError in function XQueryColors, resource 0xffffffff (request 91.0):  BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) (error 2)

in Xorg.o.log i can't see any errors at all (no EE).

in xdm.log the only thing i can see is the following:
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
Code:

FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc/" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
xdm error (pid 8135): Display :0 is being disabled
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc/" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

As suggested by idella4 I completely created a new xorg.conf. Currently not everything is working as I want it, but at least xpdf is not causing X to crash anymore. Today I just had an error using mplayer. Starting mplayer caused to crash X as well. this only happened once. I still try to figure out which line(s) in the xorg.conf caused this problem. I will post it again.

Again there is some improvement when starting gnucash. I now can see all the texts, but some appear in German and some in English.

A lots of gentoo people had similar strange X chrashing problems in these days.
If you use freetype-2.1.10-r1 try to downgrade it to freetype-2.1.10 as it suggested in Desktop Environments forum.
I hope it helps. It worked for me.

I don't understand it anymore.
I now just copied back all the settings from the previous xorg.conf file and restartet X.

Calling xpdf doesn't crash X anymore. But what I can see now in Xorg0.log is the following:
Code:

...
(WW) I810(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
...
(WW) I810(0): Detected stolen memory (7872 kB) doesn't match what the BIOS reports (12288 kB)
...
*(WW) (1400x1050,nc6120) mode clock 155.8MHz exceeds DDC maximum 140MHz
Mode: 5c (1400x1050)
...
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x25
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x27
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x29
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2b
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2d
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2f
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x31
(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so
...

These warnings I haven't seen before when I used the old xorg.conf file.

I got something more fixed now. For some reason the de_CH locale was not available anymore. I only need it for Gnucash.
So now there are only the warnings which I want to be solved. I will further investigate. Currently I can live with the situation.
3d rendering is also not as fast as it could be, but usually I don't need 3d acceleration.

So far I want to thank everyone who posted something useful. Some tips helped me to solve the problem up to the current situation. Any further help is still very appreciated.
