I am having trouble rebuilding my raid array after putting my computer into a new case.

Code:
UmHelp chris # mdadm --assemble /dev/md0 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sde1 /dev/sdf1
mdadm: cannot open device /dev/sde1: No such file or directory
mdadm: /dev/sde1 has no superblock - assembly aborted

It isn't building because the /dev/sde1 & /dev/sdf1 do not exist.

I guess my problem lies with the "sde: unknown partition table" with sde and sdf??? Anyway to fix this so I can get my data off?

hi!

according to the output of "dmesg" i think, your hardware is available (sde and sdf are physically available). You posted that you put your computer in a new case. did you plug in the harddrives to the former sata connectors?? this could be a reason for the "/dev/sde1 has no superblock" message.

you could also check if the partition is still there with
Code:

fdisk /dev/sde

Bit of a longshot, but did you really use sd[ef]1 partitions for the array and not the actual raw block device?

try running

Code:
mdadm --examine /dev/sd[ef]

Cheers

Yea the partitions are shot.

Code:
Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sde: 750.1 GB, 750156374016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 91201 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System

Command (m for help): v
1465149167 unallocated sectors

Their should be partitions there. When I was making the array I did use partitions on the drives. Can I recover the partitions somehow without wiping my data?

hi um_help!

your partition table is corrupted. try the "gpart" utility. there is an option to guess the partitions. perhaps it fixes your problem.

you can also try this link http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/other-formats/html_single/Partition-Rescue.html#AEN107 - it might help you but its very old...

Code:
UmHelp chris # gpart /dev/sde

Begin scan...
End scan.

Checking partitions...
Ok.

Guessed primary partition table:
Primary partition(1)
   type: 000(0x00)(unused)
   size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
   chs:  (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

Primary partition(2)
   type: 000(0x00)(unused)
   size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
   chs:  (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

Primary partition(3)
   type: 000(0x00)(unused)
   size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
   chs:  (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

Primary partition(4)
   type: 000(0x00)(unused)
   size: 0mb #s(0) s(0-0)
   chs:  (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)d (0/0/0)-(0/0/0)r

I don't really know exactly what this means but it doesn't look to promising. What can I do with this now?

Here is what I get from the working drive:

Code:
UmHelp chris # gpart /dev/sdc -vd

   hex:  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Here is the output from the other broken drive:

When I first built this RAID I only used one XFS partition that covers the whole drive.

Fixed my problems. I re-wrote the partition tables with fdisk and set the partition type to fd and mounted and so far everything works great.
