Hi,
in my /etc/fstab there are several entries which are not mounted at startup (noauto option). These are some network-fs as well as local devices (/dev/cdrom). Why are some of the entries shown in system:/media and some are not?

wimalopaan,
I am not 100% sure I understand you question... However, /etc/fstab is just a file written by the administrator. You can put in whatever you want, it does not have to reflect reality (though, if it does not, you may run into problems). On the other hand, /media is a directory in which you can make other directories, and it does not have to reflect anything from what /etc/fstab actually does (although again, if it does not, you may run into problems, but not necessarily)
So, /etc/fstab and /media/* are two independant things. Olds chool admis might even use /mnt/* for mounting stuff. Although it is now recommanded to use /media.
Does that answer your question ?
Note that if you intend to mount stuff in /media/mount_me you first have to create the so-called "mount point" /media/mount_me, or it won't work.
And you can create any random directory in /media if you feel like that. Just mind the security + organization issues if you do not follow common habits.
You can also use a mount point multiple times and do weird things with that. But again, there might be security issues. _________________ Compress portage tree

I'll try to clearify my problem:
In /etc/ fstab I have the additional lines:
tux2:/mnt/store /mnt/store nfs noauto,hard,intr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,async 0 0
/dev/loop/0 /mnt/test auto defaults,noauto,user 0 0
Both monut-points exist, both devices are not mounted at boot. I can manually mount both devices later.
But, if I open system:/media in konqueror, I don't see all my entries from /etc/fstab, especially I see /mnt/store but I don't see /mnt/test. So, I can mount /mnt/store with konqueror but I can't mount /mnt/test.
Please not, that the loop-device is setup with losetup and I can mount it manually. I think, it is a problem according to konqueror. I checked the source-code of mediamanager in kde. I saw, that there is a fstabbackend.cpp which should list all entries of the /etc/fstab exept some exclusions (procfs, sysfs, etc.).
I don't understand what is going on here. |
