|

Well if it isn't one thing it's another
Folks heres the deal;
I have an older Compaq Presario5000 which I bought a DLink DFE-530TX+ ethernet card for since it's former card was an old US Robotics NIC for which compatability appeared to be rather weak. So now after I boot up the x86 2006.0 LiveCD I seem to be having problems getting online. I check lspci only to discover that: Code: |
# lspci
01:0b.0 Ethernet Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6105 [Rhine-III] (rev 86) |
So I try "ifconfig" and I get nothing...
Then I tried "net-setup eth0", chose Wired, then chose "DHCP to automatically detect my setings", then I go through the motions: Code: |
# modprobe via-rhine
# modprobe mii
# /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
* Starting eth0
* Bringing up eth0
* dhcp
* Running dhcpcd.... |
...and still nothing At this point I'm left scratching my head a bit and so I turn to you, the community!!!
What the hell am I doing wrong??? _________________ Legalize It |

I don't believe so, after all this is what I am doing immediately after the install disc boots up....
At first I had checked my router by trying the same connection with a different desktop equipped with a Realtek RTL8139 and my laptop which uses a Broadcom BCM5705 Gigabit ethernet, still no dice. Afterwards, into the WinXP side of my HDD on the same laptop and I was able to get online without any snags, this sucks ! (go figure) _________________ Legalize It |

I meant have you checked the logs for any errors.
Have you tried manually setting up the routes and using a static address? If that works, at least we can be sure that the driver is working as expected. |

Okay, this is news...
I just tried connecting one of my desktops running WinXP, it typically uses the Linksys WMP54G wireless PCI card to access the router. Anyway, I figured I would try to upgrade the firmware on the WRT54G, but when I try to plug in my ethernet cable which connects me directly to the router, I notice at the bottom of the screen that the router gets connected and then a few seconds later it gets knocked off! For some reason it seems to keep going through this loop . So now I've got to try and figure out what the hell is wrong with this router before I can proceed...Any ideas??? _________________ Legalize It |

Okay, even more peculiar...
Although there's the problem with my WinXP desktop not able to connect to my router via ethernet cable, I went ahead and tried to connect my laptop running WinXP via the same ethernet cable and it picked up the connection without any problems....Now I'm even more lost _________________ Legalize It |

Okay, heres what I got on "/var/log/messages"... Code: |
Jun 23 17:44:14 livecd via-rhine: Reset not complete yet. Trying harder.
Jun 23 17:44:14 livecd eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full duplex, lpa 0x45e1
Jun 23 17:44:15 livecd eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full duplex, lpa 0x45e1
Jun 23 17:45:15 livecd dhcpcd[1648]: timed out waiting for a valid DHCP server response |
Basically, the last two lines are repeated two more times before the end of this log... _________________ Legalize It |

Could be a problem with the router. Although I cannot imagine what it may be. It does not seem like a driver problem since WinXP too has problems connecting.
Did you try setting up the routes manually? Both from the WinXP box which drops the connection and the Linux machine?
Or you could try using the wireless card (which seems to work) on the Linux machine. |

Yeah something tells me it's probably the router also, although I never used to have this problem before I moved....
Unfortunately, I already tried running Linux on the desktop with the wifi card but it seems as though it uses a Ralink chipset, which doesn't seem to be so heavily supported under *NIX/*BSD ...I think I'm just going to try picking up another router, which of course I wanted to avoid but my options are limited at this point... _________________ Legalize It |
