I accidently deleted /lib and /usr/lib (don't ask, thought I was in a different directory). So I booted up a LiveCD and copied some essential libs over before rebuilding the system to update my libs. However it seems that running emerge -e world, emerge -avuDN world or revdep-rebuild now fails during the middle of merging certain packages with a kernel panic and then make bombing out. The actual package changes depending on what command is being run. When I emerge -e world, sys-apps/groff dies, when I revdep-rebuild gcc breaks (note this seems to successfully emerge with an emerge -e world) and when I emerge -avuDN world the first package that needs to configure/compile something is normally the first to break.

Apart from my surprise that the system can still do stuff after a kernel panic (admittedly not a lot), I'm now stuck with a broken system (although this isn't portage's fault) and I can't fix it. Can anyone tell me a) how to get info about kernel panics I have experienced (seeing as I have to do a hard reboot whenever this happens) and/or b) how to fix this?

Have you used the /lib and /usr/lib directory from a recent stage3 file? That would me my first step before an emerge -e system. But its quite possible that things are still broke because files from /usr/bin /bin /sbin are expecting an other version of the libraries in /usr/lib /lib...

Yeah I did have that problem but I copied the /bin, /sbin and /usr/bin from the LiveCD as well. I forgot to mention I did have several successfull emerge -e system s before this rather strange behaviour started happening, so my system packages should be probably linked. I think the reason why some packages can compile is due to ccache, so I'm gonna disable this and see if zlib (the first package for emerge -e system) triggers the panic.

Here's my emerge --info (note I'm using some unstable packages):

Code:

In theory, anything done in userspace (as long as you're not doing weird things in /dev or /proc) should be able to make the kernel panic. Is it possible that your mobo or proc is overheating? Hard drive failing?

I'm pretty sure its not this, because I (used to be able to) reproduce it after a cold boot.

This problem seems to have gone away, though I've found a fellow sufferer in another post. The only thing I changed was to remove "ccache" from my features, though I might have recompiled the kernel several times, I forget. The point is, I can now emerge things without having to stop and hard reboot every five minutes.
