Xfig, fluxbox causing X to crash?

I'm in the process of re-installing my gentoo box, and I have encountered two strange behaviors.

1. When I try to start fluxbox from any of the login managers (wdm, kdm) nothing happens except I get a black window with an X in the middle, and then the login manager comes up again. I tried to start it using startx, killing twm, and then running startfluxbox but it just seems to freeze up. This happens with both 0.9.5 and 1.0rc. The only way I can get it to function so far is to move the blackbox binary, and link blackbox to fluxbox. This doesn't get me any of the startup goodies of fluxbox but does let me at least run it without crashing. Has anybody else encountered this?

2. When I try to start xfig, all it does is kill my entire X server and I'm back at the kdm login prompt. I tried to script the terminal where I was starting it but nothing gets recorded, and starting from the command line only shows the problem occurs after Xfig tries to connect to the X server. Has anybody run into this before? How do I debug it?
