I'm trying to get x working on my i845G. It's a DELL (what a mistake, I know). I've got the Gentoo base and kernel installed. I can log into user accounts at the command line. But x won't start. So I got the offiical Linux drivers off of the Intel website. Upon executing the install.sh script, I receive the following error:

I googled the error and found one Linspire forum post: http://forum.linspire.com/viewtopic.php?t=409519&sid=bd45bce274373316713004a3d91f9fbd
The individual with the same problem as myself didn't arrive at a solution. Besides, that post is too Linspire specific to be any helpful for the Gentoo user.

I made those 2 posts about a month ago now. Since then I gave left Gentoo by moving over to Slackware-current, lol. On Slackware, I learned that the Intel drivers I found on the Intel website (contained in the i915Graphics.tar.gz; aka IntelGraphics_060704.tar.gz) fail to install overtop the 2.6.x series Linux kernels. By that I mean on Slackware, those Intel drivers I've only successfully installed on top of a 2.4.32 kernel. I get a similar error message when I try to install those Intel drivers overtop a 2.6 kernel. So maybe if I tried re-installing Gentoo using a 2.4.x kernel, I'd be able to install these Intel drivers. At this point I think I'm happy with Slackware. I'll keep this in mind though if ever in the future I decide to switch back to Gentoo. =D

Hi,
Just managed to configure X for my motherboard with onboard 845G. It did not require any drivers downloaded from Intel - it's supported by Xorg.
First, you need to config the kernel correctly. Do "make menuconfig", go to "Device Drivers -> Character Devices" and turn on "/dev/agpgart (AGP Support)", then turn on "Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx..." support under that.
Next, make sure you have the right driver selected in your /etc/make.conf: VIDEO_CARDS="i810", then "emerge -avN xorg-x11". Make sure you see i810 listed without a minus sign.
Now to configure X, there are several methods described in the Gentoo X server config howto. One is to use "X -configure" to generate the xorg.conf. This did not work for me. What did work was the "xorgconfig" script. The problem with this script is that you need to dig up your monitor specs and your video card specs, which is hard if you don't have them on hand or are lazy and want things done automatically  . Choose "Intel i810" from the video card list.
Anyway, I supplied the necessary info, including my desired screen resolutions (1600x1200), and lo and behold, it worked.
I'm reasonably sure of the above settings - can't look at the actuals because machine's at work and I'm at home right now. However, I will check and post corrections. It seems a lot of people have problems with this chip (I searched the Gentoo forums a lot before stumbling on success), so it seems worthwhile to post something that worked.
Machine: IBM PC, Pentium 4 1.8 GHz

I think I omitted something. After "Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx..." is enabled, more options appear under "Direct Rendering Manager". Select DRM, then also the "Intel 830M, 845G, 852GM..." support. Not sure if it's needed, but I do remember selecting it.

I compiled the kernel according to what you said but it seems X doesn't detect the video card.
"X -configure" ends with :

I can see the 945GM with lspci.

Well, I used "X -configure" and it produced an zorg.conf that didn't work  . So try the "xorgconfig" script instead.

I added some features in the kernel but that didn't help.
Then I emerged Xorg 7.1 and X starts now, thanks to xorgcfg.
KDE, here I come !

Well this was my first time with genkernel, and although it's a handy utility, I don't think it detects all hardware. The same happened with me and this video chip - needed to do "genkernel --menuconfig kernel" and go in do the usual kernel tweaking thing.
Anyway, I'm glad you're getting somewhere. There are so many layers of modules I have pretty much lost track what I'm doing with all the config options!
