Question about e-mail servers and groups

I'm working with a co-worker on a project and we're facing an e-mail issue.

Basicaly, we need to be able to use e-mail groups to send e-mail. Something like sending a single mail to approver@compagny.com and get the e-mail sent X other e-mails authomaticaly. This will be done via scripts, so we need to have a serverside group solution.

Right now, the compagny as something that would do the work, but because what we're working on might end up at another client's site, where they may or not have such a facility, we need to build one into our package.

I was wondering if anyone could point me to some documentation and/or software that would allow me to do this. What I need is a mail server I can put on the application server we'll use that will take the e-mail from the application, then sent it to all the right people via the compagny smtp server.

just use /etc/mail/aliases (sendmail, postfix) or /etc/mail/virtusertable (sendmail)
