I encountered a strange behaviour in my xterm....
My whole system is utf8 enabled, every application is capable of displaying e.g. Japanese characters and I can also enter them everywhere I want (I even got OpenOffice working with it :D ).
Xterm works fine as well, it displays Japanese filenames and I can enter them in Nano and so on.
So far, so good but this only works in monochrome mode. Every coloured output in xterm (like the prompt or ls --color) shows strange boxes instead of the characters.
What is the reason for this? Is a different font used for the coloured output (...which seems quite strange)?
Maybe someone had this problem before and could give me some advice.

Maybe a shot in the dark but isn't uxterm the utf-8 enhanced version of xterm?
i use it here without any problems and colored output....just replace the call to xterm with a call to uxterm...
maybe worth a try

Hmm, there is also a command-line option for utf8 support (I use this), and besides the colors utf8 in general works fine.
But I will try your tip tonight, thank you!

OK, as I thought, uxterm and xterm -u8 are obviously the same.
Noone seems to have noticed this behaviour before (...or at least noone seems to have a solution for this); I couldn`t find anything on the internet either.
But I finally 'solved' my problem by switching to rxvt-unicode.
