|

I've been using Mandrake 9.0 for a while now and I've always used wvdial
to connect. I'm shifting to Gentoo. Did the installation from Mandrake,
but I'm now booting into Gentoo and trying to connect to the net using
wvdial. I set up /etc/wvdial.conf with the same settings I use in
Mandrake, but after it sent the username and password and starts pppd,
it disconnects almost immediately, stating something abouta modem hung
up (error code = 16)
Here's the entries in my log file:
Apr 13 16:35:04 [pppd] pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0
Apr 13 16:35:04 [pppd] Using interface ppp0
Apr 13 16:35:04 [pppd] Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/tts/1
Apr 13 16:35:04 [/etc/hotplug/net.agent] assuming ppp0 is already up
Apr 13 16:35:06 [pppd] Hangup (SIGHUP)
Apr 13 16:35:06 [pppd] Modem hangup
Apr 13 16:35:06 [pppd] Connection terminated.
Apr 13 16:35:06 [pppd] Exit.
I've copied the /etc/wvdial.conf file and the /etc/ppp folder from my
Mandrake installation to gentoo, but I get the same error.
Any ideas of what might be the cause of this? _________________ Sometimes I feel like Superman.

Hi
Same problem here.I went from Suse 7.3 to Gentoo.
I don't have the Suse installation available for the moment so I can't do this.
If you have access to the Mandrake install:
Check
/etc/ppp/options
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets
/etc/ppp/chap-secrets
.qtwvdialer/settings
/etc/resolv.conf
I am trying to get help from my ISP (Telia) but they seems to have more problems than I have.
Their suppport pages does not work and I cant send messages to them.
If you find something interresting, let me know. _________________ Me, Murphy and my computer. What a team. |

I've done some google groups searches and it looks like this is a common problem. It looks like most of these people have the problem with the same version of pppd (2.4.1).
Although this is just my unproven theory. Doesn't look like anyone had much luck fixing it. (although I can't say - some of the stuff is in German, Russian or Spanish so I can't understand the replies.)
I'll make some posts to newsgroups tonight when I get home (don't feel like setting up newsgroups on my work pc)
I might even try copying the pppd binary from mandrake to my gentoo installation. Maybe that will help.
I've already copied the relevant /etc/ppp/ files from Mandrake, but that didn't help - so I'm sure it's not a setting like what authentication to use.
This problem is currently the only thing stopping me from shifting to Gentoo! _________________ Sometimes I feel like Superman.

OK. I checked the version of pppd on my mandrake box, and its the same.
I then checked wvdial, and gentoo has a newer one, so I made a backup of the binary and copied my mandrake one. It works now!.
Therefore - I guess wvdial got too smart in the latest version. I'll investigate their site further, maybe submit a bug report, etc.
To think - I just assumed that it was pppd! Could have fixed this long ago. _________________ Sometimes I feel like Superman.

Hello,
I've found certain ISP's POP's expect pppd to be started before auth is complete and disconnects immediately (as you''ve mentioned). I've found that dialing in "stupid mode" tends to solve this problem.
Code: |
/etc/wvdial.conf
Stupid Mode = 1
|
Hope this helps... |
