PostPosted: Wed Jun 28, 2006 1:39 pm    Post subject: [solved] KDE crashes after emerge -uD world Reply with quote

Hi
After doing emerge -uD world KDE fails to boot. I have even no idea how to check what's causing the crash. I will post any files you ask for. I am using ATi mobility x600, gentoo-2.6.16 and today's update emerged ati-drivers-8.26.18 and some update to python.
Thanks for any help.

Did you run revdep-rebuild and python-updater? If all else fails you can also try downgrading to previous ati-drivers version.

I haven't ran any of them - can I do it from the livecd after chroot'ing? If not then could you please write me how, because when linux boots it starts kde automatically and the computer just crashes.

Sure. Oh, and what about etc-update or dispatch-conf? Not running it may result in a broken configuration.

What does it mean? Does the computer freeze? If so revdep-rebuild etc. won't help (but run it anyway, as you should after every emerge updating or removing any packages), and that would look like a problem with ati-drivers.

I tried everything you suggested but nothing helped. I think it might be something to do with xorg.conf - the computer boots correctly, but when it comes to loading KDE, the screen flashes couple of times and then crashes. Here is my xorg.conf:

Can you post interesting fragments of X's logs (/var/log/Xorg.?.log, /var/log/kdm.log).

What do you mean by 'interesting fragments'? The files I have are:
Xorg.0.log
Xorg.0.log.old
Xorg.1.log
kdm.log
failllog
lastlog
xdm.log
messages
dmesg
Just tell me which parts of which files you need and I'll post them.

Post Xorg.0.log and kdm.log and result of `dmesg` and `tail /var/log/messages` after x freezes (switch to text console using ctrl+alt+f1).

Interesting parts are error messages + few lines after and before them to see a context.

There we go:
1) last lines of 'messages':
Code:

Jun 29 09:43:37 eniac kdm[7972]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling.

2) interesting parts of kde.log:
Code:

(EE) fglrx(1): Quitting secondary screen -- no monitor specified.
(EE) fglrx(1): R200PreInit failed
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/, removing from list!

3) and Xorg.0.log:
Code:

(II) fglrx(1): === [R200PreInit] === begin, [s]
(EE) fglrx(1): Quitting secondary screen -- no monitor specified.
(EE) fglrx(1): R200PreInit failed
(II) fglrx(1): === [R200PreInit] === end
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting

I hope it helps. Cheers.

It seems to be related to ati-drivers upgrade. Can you try downgrading ati-drivers to previous version? (Note that it will require a reboot to take effect)

Is downgrading equal to emerging the older version? Or should I do something more? Unfortunately I don't remember the verision I had before :/...

EDIT: And btw - I don't use any secondary screen so why are my drivers asking for it?

Just emerge '<ati-drivers-version-you-have-now'.

I don't know either, it can be a bug.

I found the error - somehow the new ati drivers added their own screen, monitor, device and display to xorg.conf. After editing the file and muting all of this (leaving only my previous settings) everything is back to normal.
