I'm installing from the minimal cd, and I am having difficulties with step 1--configuring my connection. I'm using an 802.11 minipci wireless network adapter, which can't seem to be found. It registers eth0 as something with a lengthy address (00-03-0D-53-25-81-2A-44-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00), which I don't recognize; and it registers eth1 as my normal lan card. iwconfig indicates that neither of these (including something called "lo", which I don't recognize) have a wireless extension. There is nothing in .../drivers/net that seems to be appropriate for the wireless card in my computer. Any suggestions? Would one of the drivers in ...drivers/net work for my card? Is there a way I could obtain the correct driver at this part of the installation? Am I shit out of luck?
thanks,
Matthew |

I usually just settle for the wired lan during install. Wireless can be a hassle sometimes. Thats just my advice. |

lo = loopback device, something that every computer needs. And that lenghty address looks like MAC-address, every network device has one.
You could try to run "lspci | grep Ethernet" and search from Internet if there is Linux driver for the chip used in your card. "lspci" tells this about my wireless card:
Code: | 01:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5212 802.11abg NIC (rev 01) |
"AR5212" is the chip, which is supported by "madwifi" driver. _________________ When Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, they make a vacuum cleaner. |

youll have to forgive me if im about to make some horrendous phopar (sp =? ) here but i had similar problems when it came to the install, the drivers on the live cd just dont support atheros chipsets.
my solution: use the latest Knoppix (5.02 i think) to install gentoo. it only took a few minutes to get my wireless up and running from there and i was ready to go with the install.
p.s. it will cause you problems of you want to use the mirrorselect tool during the install (i think this may be optional though, its not that hard to edit make.conf yourself) or if you want to use genkernel (which most people i spoke to advised against using anyway)
i hope this helps you ![Smile :)](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |
