When I use the "Users and Groups" tool found in the Desktop administration panel of gnome and add a user to a group it does not take affect. The /etc/groups file is updated to reflect the change but when I type groups froma console I do not see the newly added group. Is there something I am doing wrong?

ok so when I log out they change, but for some reason I do nto have permissions to things that I should. For example I am in the audio group but I have no sound. I am in USB and I can't access my digicam. What could be causing this?
