I have seen this posted about a bazillion times but I have tried to add myself to the usb group and the plugdev group but I still get the can't initalize camera error when trying to connect, anyone have any clue how to resolve this?

what is the output of your groups command? Does it work as root? Do you see the camera when running usbview?

yes it does work as root
yes, I do see it in usbview, although for whatever reason that entry is red...all others are black

mine shows in red too. I have a powershot S30. Other than that you look alright. Sorry, I just installed it this morning and all worked well after adding plugdev group. Do you have other USB devices working as a mortal user?

my printer and mouse are both usb with no problems....
I added myself to the plugdev group but no go....don't know what it could be
