I unmerged utempter and pam-login to make this go.
media-libs/netpbm-10.34 failed due to some compile error, so I put it in the package.mask file for now.

After startx, I get a blank screen, but see this when I use Alt/F1:

(WW) System lacks support for changing MTRRs

The laptop is a KDS Valiant 671XH. I've been running Linux on it since it was new and Gentoo for about a year.

When netpbm failed about 1/3 of the way through the update, I exited X, just to see how things were working and X restarted just fine. Basically, I'm clueless how to get X back to running. I've noted the "Bad V_Bios Checksum" warning and the "System lacks support for changing MTRRs" warning at the end of the Xorg.0.log but don't know if they are relevant.

I'm running vanilla Kernel 2.4.31 (with plans to upgrade to Gentoo Kernel 2.4.32), because 2.6 kernel modules don't work with my sound and seem tohave other issues on this machine.

Help most urgently wanted before I ship myself back to Debian (ugh!) :-)

That's a pretty big emerge. Did you run etc-update after it (as I expect that you'd have to update a bunch of config files and doing that might resolve your startx error)?

It was about 64 individual updates. Yes, I use dispatch-conf, which is functionally the same as etc-update. There were about 50 configuration files to update, mostly in xfce4.

I've since tried to re-emerge xorg-x11 and to downgrade to the previous version. No help there, sadly.

it seems to me that this line
Code:

(WW) System lacks support for changing MTRRs

has not been addressed yet in your previous check.
I wish I knew what they were, but I´m pretty sure you will find reference to them in the kernel configuration file.

If you find out what they are, post it and I shall read it and become more informed.
For now, I would go

Code:

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig

and / or read some docs from the kernel and track down MTRR.

Oh, yes. While waiting for responses to this, I compiled a kernel upgrade to the Gentoo Source 2.4.32 enabling MTRR as well.

And now when trying to launch X (startx) the MTRR error is gone from the Xorg.0.log, but everything else is still the same, and I'm left with a blank screen till I hit Alt/F1. Sigh.

The last part of my Xorg.0.log now looks like:
Code:

(II) Loading sub module "int10"
(II) LoadModule: "int10"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/modules/linux/libint10.a
(II) Module int10: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
        compiled for 6.8.2, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.7
(II) TRIDENT(0): initializing int10
(WW) TRIDENT(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
(II) TRIDENT(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000

I also re-emerged xorg-x11 using code sugested by an error message that came up on the initial emerge (of which I know nothing), which was:
Code:

LDFLAGS='-Wl,-z,now' emerge xorg-x11

Not better or worse as far as I can tell (except MTRR error is now gone).

Thank you for your interest in my problem.

Andy

Here is an update on my X that won't start.

On a wild hunch, I recompiled my kernel with Trident Frame Buffer Support (including the cute penguin on boot up). I used "xorgconfig" to set up X to use the Linux Frame Buffer driver. After some fiddling, I was able to get it working with 16 million colors at 800 X 600 (Perhaps that's the best the FBDEV will do?).

The correct driver for this Cyberblade (Trident) video card still doesn't work. Sigh!

I needed my laptop, so I've given up and taken it back to Debian, which I don't know quite as well, and frustrates me with its opensource purist standard. But, it works flawlessly. Sigh!
Thanks for the responses. - Andy -
