SOrry I am new to all this gentoo excitement, I am currently on a mission to create a desktop multimedia gentoo linux system, but I am missing a few programs to compete with WindowsXP, for start I don't have a fax program, I would love to have one, but what is it called?
just a thought, is there some where a list of description of program names and what it does around? coz I think that would help me very much..
so far I have gnome and kde, and kde seems to be very complete, which is kind of good, but I'm not much of a fun of kde, I like gnome..
for gnome I have ......
gcombust, k3d - cd-burning
sylpheed - mail client
pornview - pictures like ACDSee in windows
gimp - my photoshop alternative,( I have photoshop, but for windows only)
xine, mplayer - movies and etc alike
mozilla, konqueror - web browser
nautiles and kconqueror - file browser (like explorer)
xchat, irrsi - IRC client
gkrellm2, gkrellm and plugins - misc info tools
amsn, gnomeICU - MSN like
gftp - FTP client (like CUTEftp)
Openoffice - MS office like ( Openoffice is pretty good, I like it)
bootsplash - bootsplash? (nice! screenshot coming soon)
wine - windows emulation program handy!
Apache, php, postfix, mutt, squirrelmail, mysql and courier-imap -web and mail server.
iptables - firewall (not using it atm)
openssh - ssh program
netkit-telnet - telnet
If there are some other programs you think it could complete this system, or that I have missed out please let me know so I can add them.
what I can think of right now that I need is....
fax program
FTP server program
p2p program maybe? is there WinMX for linux? |

proftpd is a very nice ftp server, pretty easy to set up and quite secure.
gtk-gnutella is the p2p software that I use. It's okay, but there are probably better ones. I have used Limewire in the past (java powered) and it is pretty good. |
