PostPosted: Mon Jul 03, 2006 7:53 am    Post subject: cannot config X due to module problems? Reply with quote

running xorgcfg errors out saying no screens found. The problem seems to be that it is looking for certain modules. The messages saying "Failed to load module '_x_' (module does not exist, 0) shows up with '_x_' being

sis
fbdev
vesa
vga
mouse
kbd

I had compiled my own kernel and I did not include all of those as modules but instead compiled them right in (such as sis). Will X work with them compiled in or do I have to recompile using the modules?

I appreciate any help,
phil

It says...

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculation dependencies...done!
[ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-x11-7.1 0kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB

Am I supposed to be able to use X with the drivers compiled in or do they have to be modules?

phil

You will need to "emerge xorg-x11." I was having the same problem. I emerged ati-drivers and it told me it was emerging the xorg server and I thought good and great. The problem was it didn't emerge any of the necessary modules to actually use it so I kept getting missing mouse and kbd errors. Those modules didn't get installed until I emerged xorg-x11.

There should be a note in the build script or simply emerge the modules as dependencies of the xserver. It have saved me some confusion.

I think I see what you and bunder are gettin at. Looking at my build log I noticed it talking about specifying the INPUT_DEVICES and VIDEO_DRIVERS flags in make.conf. I had done no such thing previously...

As a result it is no surprise that genlop -i xorg-x11 shows that USE=""

now I just gotta figure out what to add to my make.conf and then re-emerge x11.

I'm thinkin

INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse"
VIDEO_DRIVERS="sis vesa fbdev" (with vesa fbdev being just backups)

does all of this sound right?

I made the changes and got the same results as before. I even recompiled my kernel to use the sis module (instead of having it compiled right in). genlop -i xorg-x11 still shows no USE flags yet I thought that when I emerged xorg this time that the USE flags were there. I know they were there in my pretend emerges.

Any ideas?

I appreciate your help,
phil

This may be a silly question, but have you ran xorgconfig and set up your video card and monitor properly?

I probably should try that. I have been doing xorgcfg, which results in the errors I have been describing. I suppose it would be worth a try, but I think I'll still probably end up with the module errors.

The fbdev module does not appear amongst the errors now because I took it out of my kernel. I figured that I did not really need it.

I'm not really sure what else to do at this point...:-/

I've noticed that when no xorg.conf file was present using xorgcfg tried using these random drivers that I don't need. Through this I found out that the modules that X tries to load are in /usr/lib/X11/modules and that if the module you want is not in there that it does not load. My sis driver sure was not in there so I then I did an slocate to find out exactly where it is. I actually didn't see an sis.so but an sis_dri.so file. I havent had the chance to check my mod conf files to see if its the same but I did try copying the driver over to the X11 mods. I changed the corresponding entries in the xorg.conf file to try and manually fix the problems I have been having. That first try was unsuccessful but perhaps something similar to this is needed.

My other idea is that I simply need some other modules loaded that are not loaded. Actually, lsmod shows that I have no modules loaded after startup. I can use modprobe to load my sis module but perhaps it is dependent on other modules (that may not even exist since they currently could be built straight into the kernel) to work properly.

It might even be worth my while to try and load up linux on this computer using the live gentoo cd or another distro to see how it configures X along with the system modules. I was just hoping I could figure this out without doing that.

I appreciate all of your help and I welcome any further comments and ideas.

phil

I'm still stuck on all of this...I had to take a few days off due to other commitments, but since I've been working on this again I have not really made any progress.

I tried messing around with the kernel some more and made agp a module, etc but nothing helped. I'm still getting the same errors as before. I even tried using the genkernel setup found at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#genkernel to mimic the live cd but I could not get this to work properly since /dev/ram0 seem to not be found and caused the kernel to panic. I could only get genkernel to boot if I only used my real root, but this kind of defeated the purpose in trying it out since autodetection won't work as well. Coldplug did load some modules, but it did not help.

I wonder if my drivers will only work if I also emerge x11-drm; perhaps I have to use direct rendering with these drivers...

I might just swap out my hardrive and start over with the live cd and see if that works....

any ideas? If I can get the genkernel to work properly it may help or if I can just fix the problem directly that would be ideal.

thanks for your help. I come from a Slackware background and I really want to try out Gentoo. I don't want to give up on it before I give it a good chance.
