| I need some more range than my centrino wifi will give me, so I need to get another wifi solution. Which should I go for, with Gentoo support in mind, a usb or pc card solution? |

pcmcia is the better idea imo, as usb doesn't have the bandwidth required for decent network access.

its not that it isn't enough, there are certain things that you have to think about when going the usb ethernet route.

So if you have a USB hard drive and you're ripping a cd or something, while trying to surf, one or both are going to bog down because there is not enough to go around.

Since range is your issue, go USB. They come with an extension cable so you can get the dongle out in the open which is good for range. Because WiFi is half duplex, you will never get close to embarrasing a USB 2.0 link.
Before you go spending any money, check your TX power.
Many wireless chip sets start in low TX power mode, you may just need to turn it up.
