The ebuild is bad, see also the comments at the bugzilla page. Just install the deps and then compile it yourself (./autogen.sh && ./configure && make && make install).

Sorry for not having read the bugzilla comments. With USE="-sandbox" I could finally build it.

I've followed all the steps from the Gentopia's NetworkManager guide, but I haven't been able to see the panel yet. When I start Gnome (2.14.2) a dialog box appears saying something like (translation from Spanish, sorry): "Network Manager miniapplication couldn't find some necessary resources. Unable to continue".

I'm trying to fix it, but can't guess what it can be.

Thanks for everything!

I had that too and the solution was VERY simple. In a terminal do as root:
Code:
gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/hicolor/

The source:

Oh man... THANKS! Now I got it working :). It's beautiful... I love it.

Now I'm digging deeply in the Ubuntu forum thread to see more capabilities. They seem to be doing a great work with patches and those things.

Once again, thanks!

[EDIT]By the way... Anyone knows where to get the Metacity and GTK2 theme SLED10 uses?

Thanks a lot. I had been looking through Suse's reps but the packages I tried wasn't what I was looking for. This is it.

Thanks!

That slab ebuild has errors, which i forgot to file a bug about. Open configuration manager, then go to desktop -> gnome -> applications -> Main Menu and edit the keys that you need. They seem to get registered to the temporary build dir, not to the final path.

What's wrong with Mono? There are loads of great Mono apps which I use every day without a hitch.

Besides /me not understanding why using Mono would destroy Gnome: slab is written in plain C.

There's a new ebuild on the bugzilla page:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=140027

It compiled and installed fine. The only wierdness is that breaks when gtk-doc isn't installed, even though it has a "doc" USE flag which is disabled. It also requires NetworkManager, which you can get from Gentopia. It doesn't work (for me, on amd64), but it installs fine and satisfies the dependency.

It did take a couple of weeks, but now I have my pimped-out main-menu! You guys rock!

I'm working on modifying the ebuild so that:

1) autogen.sh doesn't run configure, and gnome_src_compile does
2) Network manager isn't required

Unfortunately gtk-doc is required. Unless someone can gurantee that if I were to patch the check out of the configure.in, I can't make gtk-doc not a depend.

Edit: --disable-NetworkManager has disappeared it seems. Anyone know anything about that?

hi,
i installed slab with the bugzilla ebuild and it worked fine, but i dont have any items in the menu. In "Favorite Applications" i only have the home folder and evolution, "Recently Used Apps" is totaly empty :(
how do i get it to update and put the apps im using in there?

edit: ok, right-click and add to favorites in control-center does the trick.

btw does someone know how i can modify the links slab is using, some applications (like amarok) dont seem to start.

Looks to me like it just uses the plain GNOME menu entries. Considering that amaroK is a KDE program, I'm a bit surprised it even shows up. Have you tried with the regular GNOME menu? You can still access it by pressing alt-F1

You need a patched gnome-desktop and gnome-panel for that to work. I've gotten it to work. As I use Ubuntu on my Desktop, I only made the debs for it - if you would like - i can just tar up the source packages and you can issue a make install on your machine - although I think its not advisable - it is because i had to go through a lot of pain to get the patch to work properly and then for the package to compile. So I was just saying that.. if I have time, I'll put up a How-To so you can do it yourself.

well I appreciate, but no thank you.
I am with gentoo and I used some overlays to install the menu, I prefer not to use some other tricks to run the menu. I'll wait unti there is a good ebuild.
the menu is still pretty usefull, even whitout recent apps.
Thanks again anyway

Sure. I've also written a HOW-To on how to get gnome-desktop and gnome-panel patched. Just ignore all the apt-get stuff and get the source packages, and patch them with the shown patches, and you should be able to get the recently-used-apps.

GNOME Main Menu 0.6.2 - Recently Used Apps

Ok, I read and followed everything in this thread, got slab built and installed...

Now where is it? How do I see the menu the way the screenshots show? I see a single menu item "Control Panel" or "Control Center" and it has two entries- one for accessibility and one for desktop background. Where is the rest of it?

Mono is as slow as java in my experience (well it is actually some kind of java). At last on amd64 it is really unstable. I newer had that much crash sins I am using linux with anything else then mono.... Well, maybe they will correct this one day, but for the moment ....

I wrote a little how-to helping slab install.
It's not perfect - still NetworkManager - but it works

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-487933.html

So it can help ;)
