wacky dependencies

OK, so I just installed Gentoo. The first thing I do is use emerge to install vim, because I needs me the vim. It calculates the dependencies, starts downloading some libraries, and before long it's downloaing X11.

I know there's gvim and what not, but I wasn't quite expecting to have to download X11 just to get vim. I read the man page for emerge and what not, but did I miss something? Is there no way to say I just want vim, not gvim?
