I've been running Gentoo on my Compaq Evo n600c since the beginning of this year, and I love it. Thanks.
What I'm interested in is this:
How about a few "meta-default" ebuild scripts. An "emerge gentoo-desktop", or "emerge gentoo-server" or something like that. So for example, when you called "emerge gentoo-server" you would be prompted for things like "install apache?, install xxxftp?, install samba? and install WEBMIN? https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=160...
Considering this would be built on top of the superb portage infrastructure, very little work would actually have to be done. And of course, for those who choose not to use it, they could simply ignore the fact that these meta-ebuilds existed.
oooh... quick refinement. I think these META ebuilds should be primarily task oriented for those new to Linux who know what they want to do, but not what they need to do it... As in, "do you want to serve web pages? ok, here are your options...". _________________ RUN!

some of those XP users' arguments about linux being slow would start to lose steam if more and more "closer to newbies" could get gentoo installed...
