Hey, I just did a stage 3 install and to my surprised the system booted. The only problem is that my screen looks like this http://img148.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mypicture0022gg.jpg (the letters are still blurry, it's not just my shaking hands from lack of sleep)

When it stops loading, I can use root but I don't know what to do. I was using vidalinux for about 2-3 days but I had to switch to gentoo. Before the vlos exp I was using windows so pardon me if my linux knowledge isn't as sharp as it once was.

edit: using a compaq presario r3360us. Ati graphic card and a 1280x800 wxga screen.

Saint Cld,

Welcome to gentoo.

When your system started, you should have seen the Grub Splash screen with your choice of boot options.
Did that appear ok ?
The splash screen is a blue image with Gentoo Linux in the bottom right.
If its missing, or looks strange, you will have an error in your grub.conf file.
This makes a mess of things for the rest of the boot.

Does logging in and typing reset at the prompt help ?

Thanks for the welcome :D

All I see is "Grub loading Stage 2" then some words I can make out; like boot. then eveything loads ups, this when the letter and screen get screwy. I don't see the image, though, and I did set the one listed in the docs.

reset does not work.

Saint Cld,

You have a typo in your grub.conf in this line
Code:
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

Other than the numbers in the (hd0.0) part, your line should be identical to mine ... no spaces.

Boot the live CD, mount your partitions (no need to chroot) and look.
The file will be called /mnt/gentoo/boot/grub/grub.conf from outside the chroot, so
Code:
 nano -w  /mnt/gentoo/boot/grub/grub.conf
will show you and allow you to change the content.

it worked! thanks a lot.

but now that i can read it i get an error

Code:
Warning: bad format on line 31 of /etc/fstab
fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/ROOT
/dev/ROOT:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternative superblock:
              e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

        *Filesystem couldn't be fixed :(
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue)

i'm going to try to change line 31 by booting the livecd but if anyone has any advice, you're welcome to share :)

Edit I fixed line 31 but i'm still having trouble with /dev/ROOT...i'll be searching the forums

Edit this how my fstab looks like:

Code:

/dev/BOOT               /boot           ext2              noauto,noatime       1 2
/dev/ROOT               /               ext3              noatime              0 1
/dev/SWAP               none            swap              sw                   0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0     /mnt/cdrom      iso9660            noauto               0 0

i guess i missed the part where i was suppose to chang BOOT to hda1, ROOT to hda3, and SWAP to hda2. thread close.

thanks for all the help :)
