I recently came across this article: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_setup_a_home-server#Network, and thought as I have an extra computer lying around it would be a good summer project. However, I have two questions that I couldn't figure out.
1) I already have a few computers sharing an internet connection through a belkin router. Will I be able to use this router in the scheme modem --> server --> router --> computers ? Also, the router has 5 ethernet ports on the back, one of which is labeled WLAN and connects to the modem. would I connect the server to this port, or one of the regular computer ports?
2) if all I want to do is to host a small website, and my own mailserver, act as a firewall, and manage my regular homenetwork, can I just use a cheap (20$) 10/100 ethernet card? Or will I notice a big decrease in performance from my current setup? (modem --> router --> computers)
Thanks a lot! |

Your best bet would be to ignore the wan port on the router and simple use it as a switch. That way you will have modem->server->port on switch with other computers.

Hosting email web etc. will be on one net card and the rest of your network will be on another (unless you are using vlans and if you don't know what I'm talking about you are probably not going to use them).
Since the will be separate, you only need a net card as fast as your net access (a 10baset card is good enough in most cases). |
