Hia,

Im looking for help on how to make dvgrab to pick up a dv camera that is recognized and handled by coriander but not by dvgrab. this is my dmesg for the ieee related stuff:

Quote:

ieee1394: Initialized config rom entry `ip1394'
ieee1394: raw1394: /dev/raw1394 device initialized
PCI: Enabling device 0002:24:0e.0 (0000 -> 0002)
ohci1394: fw-host0: Unexpected PCI resource length of 1000!
ohci1394: fw-host0: OHCI-1394 1.1 (PCI): IRQ=[40] MMIO=[f5000000-f50007ff] Max
Packet=[4096] IR/IT contexts=[8/8]
SCSI subsystem initialized
ieee1394: sbp2: Driver forced to serialize I/O (serialize_io=1)
ieee1394: sbp2: Try serialize_io=0 for better performance
video1394: Installed video1394 module
ieee1394: Host added: ID:BUS[0-00:1023] GUID[000a95fffeb43dbe]

my lsmod says this.

Quote:

Module Size Used by
video1394 17580 0
sbp2 21508 0
scsi_mod 98664 1 sbp2
dv1394 18412 0
ohci1394 35120 2 video1394,dv1394
raw1394 26904 0
ieee1394 97392 5 video1394,sbp2,dv1394,ohci1394,raw1394

i have both: /dev/video1394/0 and /dev/raw1394

coriander uses them but dvgrab tells me always:

Error: no camera exists

and last but not least i have this now:

Code:
root kdag # dvgrab --dv1394 /dev/video
video0     video1     video1394/

root kdag # dvgrab --dv1394 /dev/video0
Error: no camera exists

root kdag # dvgrab --dv1394 /dev/video1
Error: no camera exists

root kdag # dvgrab --dv1394 /dev/video1394/0
Error: no camera exists

root kdag # dvgrab --dv1394 /dev/video1394/0

any clues, ideas, places or things to check appreciated.

As far as I recall, Coriander is for displaying images from firewire webcams and similar devices (i.e. live video feeds) whereas dvgrab is for working with digital video cameras (where you insert an mini-dv tape). From the coriander site:

"However, any cameras in which you can insert a video tape (camcorders,...) will NOT work with coriander."

Whereas dvgrab:

"Dvgrab receives the audio and video data from a digital camcorder via the ieee1394 (FireWire) interface and stores them into an AVI file. It features autosplit of long video sequences into several files, and supports saving the data as raw frames, AVI type 1 and AVI type 2."

So my deduction is that firewire webcams use one protocol, and digital video cameras use another. Coriander knows about the first, and dvgrab knows about the second. So if you can pull the information from your camera using coriander then I suspect that not being able to use dvgrab is normal.

(Note, I have a IEEE1394 webcam that I use with coriander, and I have a Sony MiniDV camcorder which I haven't yet used with Linux - but will try tonight)

eyy! tx for answering..
i should have said that i'm testing both an iSight and a sony miniDV ieee1394 camera with dvgrab.

maybe im still missing something there to make dvgrab see the device..

forget what i said about coriander, you are right, i was just mentioning that i can create via de vloop a /dev/videoX that ultimately is the place where dvgrab is supposed to pick up the feed. (?)

anyways i hope you manage to get your camera working, please let me know whoch modules you used for the sony.

cheers!

/kdag
