Well, the title explains itself.

I'm looking for a xorg.conf which creates two screens (lcd + crt) in my mobility radeon 9700 with the open source ati drivers.
I've found http://thinkwiki.org/wiki/Additional_options_for_the_radeon_driver, with a way to do a xinerama like config.
That's not what I want. I want two screens with two desktops.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for my poor english ;)

More info...

When startx with external monitor connected, radeon driver only detects this last but not the internal laptop lcd.

This is the xorg.log in that case:

i have HP nw8240 with additional LCD monitor over VGA cable (via port replicator).
video chip is X700.

i get dual head conf to work with x7.0 , ati-drivers-8.26.18 (masked ~x86) and kernel 2.6.16.19.
just follow procedure in this page: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers
there is just one problem, on big LCD monitor mouse pointer image is random garbage (usually white color, so pain to work in some programs)

here is my xorg.conf:

Yes, that's the way I used before but I'm giving a try to new open source drivers, which are going faster than the binary one on my ati radeon 9200 SE desktop.

Anyway, thank you for your interest. ;)

I got this working today, same config as you (M9700 and open-source drivers). These are just the relevant sections (monitor, screen and server layouts):

Be aware that you need to plug the external monitor AFTER the framebuffer is set on the laptop monitor, otherwise only the CRT will work (don't know why yet). To start the X session:
Quote:
$ startx (only laptop)
$ startx -- -layout dual (dual-monitor)

I just upgraded to modular X and an using Xinerama with the open source drivers on X600 SE. When I use fglrx, Xinerama works fine but the mouse cursor is an ugly white block on the second monitor. I tried turning on software cursor (SWcursor), and that got rid of the white block, but then the mouse left droppings whenever I moved it.

Then I tried the radeon driver with Xinerama, and it works perfectly. I have no idea why - performance seems about equal to the fglrx implementation, and I suspect both the radeon and fglrx drivers use shared code. The only oddity is that the two drivers have different opinions as to which is monitor 0 and which is monitor 1, and of course fglrx assigns them the way I want. I can't convince the radeon driver to assign my primary monitor as monitor 0.

Note with Xinerama both dri and RenderAccel are disabled. Not a big deal for me as I don't play games. Xinerama is much more important to me. If ATI would ever implement it, I'd be all set, but this is good enough for now.

Thanks a lot to all of you :D

Finally I've got more than I wanted.
I've done a xorg.conf with three server layouts: single LCD, MergedFB and Dual Head.
First and second uses the experimental r300 open source driver, so I've got opengl. The last don't do that at the moment

Now, I've two more questions.

Has anyone composite extension (shadows an transprency) working, let's say simply nice, not perfect, with kde & ati ?
I've tried it but it goes very slow, and that's not what I've read in this wiki: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Xorg_X11_and_Transparency.

The other, what must I do for doing fullscreen in only one monitor when using mergedfb ?

Tryed to switch to radeon driver, and X goes down in flames:
------
Backtrace:
0: X(xf86SigHandler+0xa0) [0x80bb890]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
-------
I found nothing unusual in in Xorg.log. For now i must live with fglrx&SWCursor, which works like yours (leave trails here and there), but is visible.

Sorry, haven't checked back here in awhile. If you are still interested, let me know and I'll email you my xorg.conf for radeon.

Yes, of course. There's always time to try new configs ;)
Send it to expclt@yahoo.es.
Thanks.
