|
|
Hi
In my system are installed nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r6, gentoo-sources-2.6.14-r5, and xorg-x11-6.8.2-r8.
Every time I update the gentoo-sources, e.g. gentoo-sources-2.6.16-r12, actually I need to upgrade the nvidia-kernel, e.g. nvidia-kernel-1.0.8762-r1 . Doing that makes that the nvidia-driver does not work despite it compiles without any problem. I get the error complaining about no screen.
To upgrade the gentoo-souces and the nvidia-kernel do I have to upgrade xorg-x11 to 7.0.1 too?
I followed the different threads in the forums and I did not find anyone who got the same issue than I.
I have a nvidia GeForce FX 5200 card. I read the nvidia howto and my card is listed as a working card with the new nvidia drivers.
Suggestions?
thank you
Serge

no screen means the config in /etc/X11/xorg.conf has probably been overwritten.
Rul of thumb cure is run
xorgconfig and re-configure it.
If it's too technical the are a number of docs available on the gentoo home site re configureing X and kde and gnome and such _________________ idella4@aus |

Hi Idella4
My xorg.conf file has not been overwritten....
Running xorgconfig would be OK if we were talking about the nv driver provided by xorg.
The changes we have to apply for the nvidia driver are done manually.

re upgrading, no you don't have to. I had the xorg-1.6. with everything working allright but without the nvidia driver.
You get an error complaining about no screens but does that mean you can't get a graphical X at all?
I upgrade only as an attempt to straighten out the nvidia setup.
I eventually did but only by going outside portage and getting a driver and installer from the nvidia site.
I don't know what's happenned to the nvidia-kernel package. there are posts everywhere about it. _________________ idella4@aus |

I dont get X working at all when upgrading the nvidia-kernel: no screens found.
So I am stuck with my nvidia-kernel 1.0.6629-r6 and gentoo-sources-2.6.14-r5 versions.
If I want to upgrade to the last stable gentoo-sources version, I have to upgrade to a newer version of the nvidia kernel driver. Doing this, I lose X or I have to use the nv driver provided by xorg.
My question is to know if the newest nvidia-kernel versions only work with the xorg-x11-7.0 packages.

No you do not need to upgrade to xorg-7.0
Post the exact error from /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the video sections of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file for better help. |

If I understand, despite I did not make any change in my xorg.conf file, with the new nvidia driver, my LG L1720P is detected but gets wrong values.
How can I make it work??
Thanks

serge
two things, mb more.
you posted one out of two. how about the xorg.conf. It looks a bit like
Code: |
Section "Device"
Identifier "video-nv"
Driver "nvidia"
#VideoRam 262144
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection
# **********************************************************************
# Screen sections
# **********************************************************************
# Any number of screen sections may be present. Each describes
# the configuration of a single screen. A single specific screen section
# may be specified from the X server command line with the "-screen"
# option.
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "video-nv"
Monitor "monitor1"
DefaultDepth 24
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
|
however. point two is most interesting.
The portions you have posted exemplify my grief with portage. and you have exactly the same thing.
Version 1.0.8762 is the latest and greatest.
Version 1.0.6629 is the antiquated thing from the past that supplied by portage doesn't work in a current kernel.
I know; I spent two days trying to make it fit.
So do yourself a favour; go to http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-8762.html
and grab it. Kill X and get to a console and install. Make sure ofcourse to get the one for your model and not mine.
All I can say is it's the only way I got any sensible outcome with nvidia and kde.
Then you will almost be there. If you can't get it right, as the previous helper prompted,
POST xorg.conf. It's the first thing I pointed to and after 7 posts it's still not on display. _________________ idella4@aus |

Hi
After having re-configured X with X -configure I made it work.
But i have only one resolution 1280x1024
the new xorg.conf is:
Code: |
SubSection "Display"
ViewPort 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection |
If I add the resolution like in the old config file
Code: |
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Virtual 1024 768
EndSubSection |
it does not work, and X does not start.
How can i get the 1024x768?
Because I need this resolution and loer ones to get fullscreen in some games...

Maybe copy the format that was posted above?
Code: | SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubSection |
I have a GeForce FX 5700, and I've not had any problems running the ~x86 nvidia-kernel and -glx |

Brainfart !!!!
count your blessings
Serge
you are almost there.
notice the difference between your entry and mine. I don't use virtual; mind you some time I should try it out.
however, to have the choice, model your entry by mine.
your entry nominates ONE virtual setting. mine nominates a choice of three modes. It all adds up.
If X doesn't start, that's to do with settings in other places. _________________ idella4@aus |
