Try commenting out (sticking an # infront of the line of text) the server line on your make.conf file. I never had much luck with mirrorselect myself.

1) check that whole "make.conf is blank porblem"
see if you accidentally made a make.conf on the livecd's ramdisk filesystem, and/or you forgot to type in the excact path of make.conf (if you not chrooted yet, then it would be /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf, if you are chrooted, then it will be /etc/mak.conf)

2) check to make sure you copied over the /etc/resolv.conf from the livecd, to the new install, at /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf (as per the handbooks instructions)

it looks like there is a valid url to be sought after, but you are having name server issues (which means /etc/resolv.conf is not there)

Thank you yes i can open and read the make.conf file as before, I DID copy over the resolv.conf file.. i did exactly like the handbook and it didn't complain but as im looking now I can not find it and i have no idea why it didn't copy it over. Only thing i can see is "resolve.conf" but i guess thats something else..?

so what can i do now? did i mess it up or can this be rescued? :cry:

EDIT::btw i have already chrooted

Move into another terminal by pressing alt+ctrl+f2 that will dump you back into the live cd enviroment now you can type in
Code:
cp  -L /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf

then move back into your other terminal by pressing alt+ctrl+f1 and try to sync again

You can turn it off if you like, but you first have to remount your drives including proc and bind and chroot back into the system.

nothing will go wrong if you just leave it on. I left a gentoo installation midway for 12+ hours, then came back (I had left a little note for myself as to what I had gotten done) and finished it all.
