Hi to everyone,
i dont know if i have much linux skills to post in this forum
Well mi problem is this: i want to install a new, completely working linux distribution over a quite old (2000) silicon graphics machine.
It is a 550L model, and it has a red-hat/sgi linux 6.2 distro (SGI propack 1_3).
Is it possible in your opinion to do this? The old OS, is making all my colleagues paranoid/sick because thousands of problems it continues to generate.
I'm actually feeling hopeful about gentoo.
What do you think?
Thanks! |

sure it's quite feasible. We don't know how familiar with gentoo you are.
You say linux; does that imply gentoo, or a generic request?
What's important is the type of apps the final system requires;
console vs. graphical interface, office apps or kedit and nano,
standalone or can it draw from another machine. _________________ idella4@aus |

thx for your reply,
well, we need a graphical interface, because we are dealing with structural biology, and it would be nice if we could connect to and from it with graphical interface.
I have to say I was wrong with hardware specifics: that 550L i've taken from /etc/sgi-preload-release is not correct.
The model is a sgi 230 with red-hat/sgi linux 6.1.
Yes im looking for gentoo, because of flexibility.
