I dont want a slow bulky terminal. I need a basic plain shell like xterm that supports tabs.

I wouldn't call xterm 'plain' or 'basic'... it's got an incredible amount of support for old or specialized devices.

Rather than answer your question  , I'm going to pick on your terminology a bit....

A shell is a program like bash, ksh, zsh, sh, or csh, that is run from/on/in a terminal (obsolete hardware device) or a terminal emulator (xterm, rxvt, aterm, konsole, putty, etc.).

So what you want is a basic plain *terminal emulator* like xterm that supports tabs.

Or use any terminal emulator that you want + GNU Screen.
