As whiskas said -- read the HowTo. Xgl is not in Portage, it's available through an overlay. |

Another vote for portage include. Hell, we do have GCC 4.2 alpha, what is wrong in having masked Xgl? _________________ It is not enough to have a good mind. The main thing is to use it well.

There's a more detailed discussion in this bug about adding Xgl to Portage. I agree with those who say the rapid pace of development, the alpha status of Xgl/compiz and the need for CVS snapshots of various packages in Portage mean it's too soon to add it to Portage.
Given how much tweaking is necessary to get it to work properly, what's the big deal about using an overlay? CoffeeBuzz, nesl247 and roderick are doing a fantastic job maintaining xgl-coffee. If you want Xgl, read the excellent HowTo, install via the overlay, and go to the main Xgl forum thread if you have problems.
When Xegl is working properly (I think in Xorg 7.2) so we have a unified Xgl-based server instead of the current Xgl-on-top-of-Xorg-server workaround we have now, and when the current alpha deps are release versions, and when David Reveman has got Gnome-based compiz into beta-shape and someone has made it work more cleanly under KDE, then it will be time to add it to Portage. |
