cheater1034, could you please take a look a your gcc-ebuild (4.1.1-r1), as soon as you're computer is up & functional / running gentoo

yeah yeah, just try copying the c* files from the portage gcc/files directory to the overlay/gcc/files directory.

When it works, there is "checking all filesystems" after "remounting root filesystem read/write"

Ok, there is one thing I would try, since this error happens on reiser4 mounting, I would definitely boot up the conrad cd and run fsck.reiser4 FIRST, then run --fix or --rebuild-fs as necessary (it will fix the errors if it finds any then)

Let me know if this works, if not, I will assist you further.

Okay after my install finished without errors, I rebooted and got the exact same failure :( .... mhh I thought let´s check the filesystem and *surprise* it is consistent.
So are there any other possibilities to solve this !

Has anyone else following this guide had problems getting java properly aligned to the java upgrade guide?
(this one: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/java/java-upgrade.xml )

Specifically, I have not been able to set the 1.4 vm properly; java-config-1 -S sun-jdk-1.4.XX comes back with a trace and complains JAVA_HOME is not set correctly. Same with blackdown-jdk.

Thus kdepim-meta won't install because cyrus-sasl complains that my java configuration is not correct.

Stays the same after several deep emerges of system and java stuff. Stays the same after revdep-rebuilds and env-updates.

If anyone else is having these problems I can post more details (Tell me what you need besides the java-config-1 and cyrus errors). If not it's my own PITA and I will eat it elsewhere.

thx
kevin

Code:
# emerge portage
# emerge --sync

maybe it would be better to sync first and update portage after?

I had a similar problem. The thing is after the initial installation everything seemed ok (the reboot went smooth), then I emerged a whole bunch of things (xfce4, kopete, audacious, etc...) and made some changes. When I rebooted again I got the init error. I searched the forums and tried some solutions to similar problems (reinstall/upgrade udev, reinstall baselayout) but they didn't help. Then I remembered that when I initially created my /etc/fstab I misspelled nodiratime (that's when it booted fine), then when emergeing stuff and configuring my system I caught the error and corrected it, then the error happened on the next reboot (and the next and the next...). Removing nodiratime from fstab fixed the problem for me. Makes me wonder what I am doing wrong that won't allow me to use nodiratime with reiser4... do I need something compiled in the kernel or something in a config fie (/etc/conf.d/... ?)? Anyway my computer boots fine now.

is there any reason for x.org 7.1 to still be masked?

The guide's outdated is the main reason, I plan on installing gentoo on my new system today, which means an update to both no-sources and the conrad guide.

Yay!

Thankyou, I am nearly about to fix 2.6.18-rc6-no1, and the guide will certainly come by tomorrow!

:)

Yay! I get my Inspiron 6400 (work laptop) soon and, well, I'm not afraid to bork away. Just need to come up with an appropriate daily(complete) backup strategy for the quickest possible recovery.

As a side note-I've been following the Reiser4 discussions between you and Vipernicus(sp?). My first Conrad install went pretty smoothly with reiser4 and no sources. Minus having to run(and successfully, I might add) fsck.reiser4 to fix 2 fs problems, the fs was *noticeably* faster than 3.6. However, I've no empirical data to compare a conrad install on 3.6 vs 4 ;-)

I am concerned about arriving on a "fool" proof full system backup scenario as I will be using this laptop for work.

ps-I'm a little hesitant now to install VMWare on a Reiser4 partition(thanks to 'pernicus post somewhere, I believe). Do you have any experience on the matter? Would you recommend a seperate ext3 partition for vmware?

The way I usually do things is create a Work_In_Progress folder, and make sure to keep it synced on a server everytime I modify it. Keep your email backed up daily, best way to make sure of this is the use something like IMAP4 and not POP3. Keep a Documentation folder on a remote server, and make sure your Sysadmin keeps it backed up.

In the ideal situation, your workstation shouldn't have much of your important work on it.

You might even want to consider mounting your home folder on a remote server.

What do you actually need to backup on your workstation?

Essentially, I want a full system backup once I've gotten Gentoo installed/configured. Quick reinstallation from a system backup is my objective.

<<wondering aloud>>Looks like I can do that with the stage 4 script and a live cd(Reiser4, of course;). Now, I can use remote shares to store /home/blah/download and ../Mydocs stuff, but for convenience, they will need to be on the laptop as well.

Given the 6400 has a 120GB 5400rpm sata and dvdrw, I'm trying to think of the optimal partition layout, types, sizes. Hmmm...plan on running VMware so I can have the same problems as windows users, only virtually.
/boot ext3
/swap ext2
/tmp reiser4
/ reiser4
/vmware ext3(with tuning? I'll have to look at a few more of your posts on this 'ernicus)

60GB in total

/backup

60GB in total

Yes, I know. I'm paraniod about borking my laptop, though i will eventually.

eselect >= 1.0.3 blocks eselect-compiler.

what now?

are we going to stop using it now?

or we stop following new versions of eselect?

!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.

...the important parts of the message lost on the kde clipboard...it missed some .js files and xpi_install when tryed install the package, compiles successfully
