I had the same problem, what I had to do, was change the gpm configuration to IMPS/2 instead of PS/2 and restart gpm service. _________________ Viper-Sources Maintainer || nesl247 Projects || vipernicus.org blog |

Hello everyone,
sorry I've been away for a few days.
I have 4 pages of replies to go through and I'll answer them all as good as possible soon.
remember this is a _pre_ release, so please don't assume it all works perfect, which it unfortunately doesn't
I plan on testing the guide completely (myself) , before making the initial 3.0.0 release.
GPM issues and the script will be fixed by explanation. (an extra step or two that says how to configure gpm properly, to run the script properly. or if you're in an X CD, gpm isn't needed)
*EDIT
well, pre-release has been fun, final release will be my super cool gcc 4.1.1 overlay (not from svn), NO trace of gcc 4.2 will be in anymore.
I don't think this will disappoint anyone, the _pre_ releases were for everyone to get a rough idea of what was happening.
3.0.0 rough final changes
* conrad-updater might be improved in some aspects
* GCC 4.1.1 overlay for conrad
* GCC 4.1.2 UNSTABE'LY has a 15% chance of being in the guide as an alternitive to 4.1.1 (unless something really changes my mind then <- no)
* A work-around for the gpm requirement may be found, if not, you don't need the conrad-updater for the fresh install, so I explain that seperately just in case, and if I can't find one (TERM="xterm") or something then I will also explain configuring gpm
* more detailed configuration explanations (/etc/conf.d/prelink, /etc/conf.d/gpm, etc)
-* release no5 maybe to fix staircase woes (not guaranteed, but probable)
--* if "-* does not happen, the guide will revert to 2.6.17-no2 for stability purposes.

My webhost at bfgraphics.net is suspended for some reason (I can't figure out why, the host sucks)
hopefully I can get in contact with someone soon, I've already sent an email.
The result of this being suspended, means you can't use the guide, which relies on the web host, maybe I'll temporary host with thoffmeyer at conrad-projects.org (I'll permanently host at conrad-projects.org, once I get enough money to get a VPS server)
*EDIT*

Upgraded from pre status to prep status.
Functionality has been dropped, the guide can not be used during this stage. prep status is the final state before the final release. It is a preview of the final features going to be included in end guide 3.0.0
2.6.17-no5 in the works! Will fix all issues with everything imaginable almost possibly.

I only need mirrors for my livecd I was just having some trouble with bfgraphics.net, which is all fixed now. bfgraphics.net is expiring in a month in favor of conrad-projects.org, which will be hosted in a VPS with _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

Updated to prep2.
Also, conrad-updater does not require gpm anymore, so it won't randomly die at all. _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

|
|
Hi cheater,
I just started the install (prep2... Found the disclaimer in the top a bit to late, so i'm just goning to try to push ahead now )
I found some typos ( I think ):
step 4.3: shouldn't line 2 read:
# mkdir -p /mnt/gentoo/proc /mnt/gentoo/boot /mnt/gentoo/dev /mnt/gentoo/var/log/portage /mnt/gentoo/usr/local/portage
step 8.1: the first code-block:
# nano -w /etc/locales.bulid
And since we're using glibc 2.4* shouldn't it be "/etc/locale.gen" (to shut up warnings at locale generation-time by the glibc-ebuild). The format is pretty much the same as locales.build except that the delimiter between <locale> and <charmap> is a '' (space) instead of a forward-slash.
That's as far a I currently am... It sure is a nice read and I'll definitely let you know the outcome of all this
Thanks for a great guide...

Thankyou for finding those! Just fixed them
---
Status: 2.6.17-no5 <-- process of being boot-tested
Status-CG: 3.0.0 <-- all new files updated, need to sync the guide.
conrad-updater: no longer requires gpm (phew) as of 1.1 (latest uploaded ver. = 1.2)
within 30 minutes I might have both released. _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

You're welcome
Is it best to wait and start from scratch once the final version is out? For instance, I can't find any mention of the hashstyle USE-flag in the prep-guide, but I know it's out there and should be used somewhere. It just isn't enabled by default.
This is probably fixed in the final version, right?
Can't wait to get started...

The locale.gen file is not used until after glibc-2.4 is built, afterwards, you edit the newly created locale.gen, and then run 'locale-gen' to create the locales. _________________ Viper-Sources Maintainer || nesl247 Projects || vipernicus.org blog |

Well, I just finished building glibc, without a userlocales USE-flag, without a locales.build, but with a locale.gen and the ebuild finished with creating the locales mentioned in locale.gen and no others,...
When you're using a locales.build file and the userlocales USE-flag, the ebuild complains at the very end that it has to convert your locales.build file to a locale.gen file and that you realy should be doing that yourself (If i recall the words correctly )
So what you're saying might be true if you were building glibc without an ebuild file, but the ebuilds for 2.4.x in portage specificaly ask for it at the end of the build-process...
Check the r4-ebuild in the conrad overlay... it doesn't even mention locales.build anymore, but runs locale-gen using locale.gen in toolchain-glibc_pkg_postinst()
Jan Peter
EDIT:
I think locale-gen is the one responsible for the warning that you should use a locale.gen instead of a locales.build and for the automagical conversion of one to the other at the end of the emerge, but I'm not sure... _________________ Stand back, intruder, or I'll blast you out of space. Conrad Guide 3.0.0 released!
Awesome release ahead of us, changes > prep include.
* completely updated overlays
* A lot more explanation and correction in the guide itself
* conrad-updater updated to version 1.3, and it doesn't need gpm anymore
* completely cleaned up make.conf _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

BUG:
/etc/portage/package.*/all does not override /etc/portage/package.*/conrad
temporary solution:
mv /etc/portage/package.*/all /etc/portage/package.*/misc
will be fixed in 3.0.1 (a few minutes) _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

Conrad,
I started over yesterday with your "pre2" guide and have just kind of kept going with it through your updates here this morning. When I initially tried to emerge the no-sources-2.6.17-r5, I received a complaint that there wasn't a digest for '2.6.17-mm2.bz2'. I simply forced a new digest on it and then it emerged just fine.
Also, I still am confused a bit on the 'hashstyle' USE flag that can be specified for 'binutils'. I think I did my first build without it but then after glibc 2.4-r4 and binutils 2.17 were in place put it in my USE flags, and that seemed to work ok...
Thanks for all your efforts! _________________ Americans for Fair Taxation because the current tax system is not only burdensome but corrupt as well! |

For the binutils overlay, I forgot to remove the IUSE for hashstyle, it has no effect, the patches are applied no matter what on prelink, glibc, and binutils

updated to 3.0.1, it fixes a minor bug. _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

Two things, first why not set -O3 in the cflags?
next, there is a bug with the new Portage version, it demand putting a dir name /var/tmp/binpkgs
else, it will complain about it |

conrad: for those with the pre version installed, would emerge -e world be the best upgrade path. Did anything change in binutils or glibc overlay or just gcc ? |
