Hi.
I am having trouble with this.
When emerge glibc I get this erorr
call stack:
ebuild.sh line 1545: called dyn_compile
ebuild.sh line 940: calld src_compile
glibc-2.4-r4.ebuild, line 1183 called toolchain-glibc_src_compile
glibc-2.4-r4.ebuild, line 257: Calld die

In the log file it says:
cpp='i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -E -x c-header' /var/tmp/portage/glibc-2.4-r4/work/build-default-i686-pc-linux-gnu-nptl/.elf/ld-linu$
FATA: kernel too old

and then because of this erorr all the rest.
What can I do please? is there a bug here?

The kernel that is in use (whatever the livecd uses) is too old. You need a livecd with 2.6.16 or higher.

EAD, that version of the livecd is old. Look at step 1.1 of the guide, and it'll point you to the new version of the livecd  .

that would be too easy to read the guide, much quicker to cut and paste :P
Hehe he probably doing what i did a year ago and used gentoo as his frist distro. I will warn you once, its a hard battle using something like this as a frist distro. Back out now and try a differnt distro until you get the just of things and then slowly get into gentoo dont get into to it with out knowing anything :)

It's actually not that hard. I started with slackare, and there isn't a major difference (yes it's binary vs source, but everything was still a manual configure).

No, I used many distors before
like Mandriva,PCLinuxOS, and ARCH.
It just that Gentoo is a bit differnet, I allways have "cold" start.
Any way, I fix it up, Read a lot of wikis and your guid, and right now my computer is installing the damm GCC 4.2 (it taks a lot of time!!!).
ok guys?
So I am not a newbie.

offtopic, Where can I find some changelog of GCC 4.2 ? and is it stable for my system??
anthor thing I wanted to ask, Do I need to do "emerge -e system && emerge -e world" after the install? I have Athlon-xp and the stage 3 is for i686, will there be any benfits?
and other thing, How can I know if all the LDFLAGS optimizion are on? beside looking in the make.conf ?

I don't see why Gentoo can't be a first distro. If you're willing to read, research and learn then Gentoo is a great distro. I think it condescending to assume that other people can't handle Gentoo.

Personally, when I started with Gentoo, I did so with this guide. However, I read up any why cheater went with the things he did at every step. And then I deviated from the guide where I wanted to. If anything, I think the guide can be improved by better explaining the steps, what is going on, and why certain decisions are being made.

You don't learn enough by copying and pasting.

Actually, in my opinion, Gentoo is by far one of the easiest distros. Gentoo does alot of the hard work for you. With Gentoo all problems and work are documented inside and out, available, and you also have many tools for easy fixes. You don't get so many "we did it for you" features like you do with Gentoo. I mean, the only hard part about Gentoo is the initial installation, but even that has been simplified. Back in the day Slackware was harder, CRUX is definitely more difficult to use, and even Arch doesn't give you as many "we did it for you" tools. I try not to assume anybody is a newb. I was just poking fun anyways. ;)

Was there any special reason for switching back to glibc-2.4-r4?

I think Gentoo is very nice.
Conrad seem to be bleeding edge as it can get, and is realy fast!!
The problem here is the install, not that it hard to do, it is just very very long(I did some more steps to make it up allmost from stage 1), but after that I think that with the knoldge I have from ARCH or others distros I should be just FINE.

the only reason i said such was due to all the reading it envoles for gentoo. Yeah gentoo came along way since last year, it is becoming more user friendly but when coming from a background of many gui os's it can be a bit over whelming for some. But with gentoo there is a ton of documents now then there was year ago. Sorta like saying it was the wild west then and now its becoming a city of well-to-do people.

Sorry EAD, i wasnt sure, nobody is a newb just a late bloomer. :P

Any clue for l9ft b9hind question i just got that rebuilding again.

Hi.
I have tried doint emerge -e system.
just before the line you need to do emerge -e world in the install guide (actually I was trying to do "emerge -e systme && emerge -e system && emerge -e world && emerge -e world)
And I got an erorr with Perl.
I have posted the erorr description here in the "Install" section forum.
Can someone tell me why did it happen and how can I fix it?
and if I will try doing just emerge -e world now, like nothing happend, will the install continoue ok?

the guide said nothing about emerge -e system, why were you trying to do this? You need to follow the guide exactly if you expect it to work. Also, quit cross-posting, this thread is sufficient.

Ok, but why not doing so? it should make the stage3 be more optimized to my system. why doesn't it work?
and if I continue from here doing the emerge -e world, even after the erorr, shoul everything be ok??

ead:
one reason why not to do a emerge -e system is its not really needed since it is a fresh instal, so all you need to do is build the tool chain and the world since most of the stuff in the system are included in the world install.

if you don't want to follow the guide, don't. But quit asking for help, and then not listening to the advise you get. :x

There is a known problem with emerge perl, Can someone know how to solve things up?

Gee Barney
If you just keep your gun in the holster untill you need it
then you won't keep shooting yourself in the foot...............HEHE............j/k

I remember my second Gentoo install. I used Jackass Project Linux and
the guide specifically said, "if you don't follow the guide, we won't supprt you.

Needless to say when i did my 3rd Gentoo install using the awesome
Evolution Mission i figured i best follow the guide properly so if i had a question
the builders wouldn't freak on me. Unfortunately "or actually fortunately" I
never had to ask any questions on that install because the guide was so precise
everything went flawlessly.

Needless to say my system totally hauls ASS
Just my two cents

Look, I agree with you, but it is LINUX and it is Gentoo, the all point here is trying improve and doing things that guids don't give you.
I followed the guide, but I think there is something I can do better, beside doint emerge -e system shouldnt be that hard, isnt? Why can't it run for (few hours or days) and just say every thing went ok?
