I am looking for Open Source alternatives to managing printing in a large Windows computer lab environment. This enviornment has several printers, and around 100 PC's. The printing output is massive, and this solution must support a wide range of heavy duty printers with options for things like stappling, duplexing, etc. (Xerox 5500dtn). Is Windows Server 2003 still my best option, or can CUPS/SMB handle this? Are there any other Open Source options?
Tanks for the advice,

From my point of view, Samba can do the job.
No graphical interface, more power ! _________________ Powered by Gentoo Linux since 2003 |

CUPS can handle it fine, as long as the printer understands postscript (likely) and that you can aquire a PPD file for the printer. (Also likely. The PPD file is sort of like a description to tell CUPS which features the printer can support.) I've deployed a couple of Kyocera printers similar to this one and in this price range. They've been humming along fine since.
You don't even really need Samba unless it's essential that the printer show up as a Windows workgroup printer. Otherwise, just use CUPS and tell Windows and everything else that understands IPP to send the print jobs to http://printserver:631/printers/Xerox_5500dtn. |
