|
|
I know that it *is* possible to install GTA2 under Wine, but I failed to do this. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, because everybody managed to install it successfully GTA2 is a free download version from Rockstar. I've tried the following versions of Wine: 0.9.3, 0.9.10, 0.9.12, 0.9.16 and 0.9.17. First of all, I've unzipped the GTA2INSTALLER.exe:
Code: | $ unzip GTA2INSTALLER.exe |
and got GTA2.exe and GTA2_README.TXT files. Then I ran the installer:
In most cases (I forgot already exact versions of Wine) I'm getting such messages:
Quote: | err:ole:marshal_object couldn't get IPSFactory buffer for interface {00000131-0000-0000-c000-000000000046}

Here Wine hangs forever with 0% CPU usage. Some versions hangs too, but consuming 100% CPU. Can anybody give me some clue on this problem? What am I doing wrong? |

Nope. They released the stuff for free recently. The first one was DOS, but they rereleased the thing for motherf**king XP. The second one was always W*s. |

Seems like it's another classic case of "Wine misuse"
1. You installed it incorrectly. wine GTA2INSTALLER.exe (correct way)
2. You run it incorrectly. wine GTA2.exe (correct way)
3. Look help from Wine AppDB and submite your test results there
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=3132
4. In Wine you need to play safe so what things do not get broken. |

Do not work for me:
Code: | $ cd ~/software/games/wine/gta2
$ wine GTA2INSTALLER.exe
wine: could not load L"H:\\software\\games\\wine\\gta2\\GTA2INSTALLER.exe": Bad EXE format for
|
So, I was forced to do unzip GTA2INSTALLER.exe, whether it is correct or not.

What's a difference between wine ./GTA2.exe and wine GTA2.exe? |

OK, gta2 is working finally. At first, I have removed ~/.wine dir, then I have installed gta2 with wine-0.9.20 (wine GTA2INSTALLER.exe), then tried to run it, but the main menu was absolutely black (the sound and intro videos are OK though). Setting HKCU\Software\Wine\Direct3D\DirectDrawRenderer to "opengl" with regedit (as was suggested somewhere) didn't helped, so I downgraded to wine-0.9.10 and gta2 is working now. The only problem is KDE panels, that overlapping the game screen... |

I do not have that kind of problems or errors at all.
hmm most likely some kind of problem happening in specific graphic cards... what graphic card? drivers? |

Here it's nVidia GeForce 6600 GT
kernel 2.6.17.13 (stock from kernel.org) hmm and latest nVidia drivers (x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.8774)
It might just be that Wine bugs with that card since all Wine developers use high end graphic cards so it's possible
that there was no actual testing for that card before code was accepted to Wine. Second possiblity is driver
bug that do not seem to be that likely. |

you hsould fill a bug because gta2 works with an old version of wine and not the lastest one(at wine bugreport not gentoo bugreport) |

Tried with wine 0.9.25 but it is not working either.
I first got stutterring sound and very poor framerate ingame ... then is got my dri working again since it was broken after an update, and now i got a black screen with slow background music , no menu, no game, no more beer :¬
Anyone had any luck ?
Oh, and thanks to the Great Firewall of China i cannot access winehq so i cannot see any of their bug report on this, even if i saw their was some with google ... arg. _________________ "Because two groups of consumers drive the absolute high end of home computing: the gamers and the porn surfers." /.
