I just reinstalled gentoo, this time instead of genkernel I compiled my own kernel (and then recompiled it twice to get support for ide and then ext3!!) but ultimately I am now able to boot to my kernel.
my network card (pcnet32) dosen't load at boot, even tho I have added pcnet32.ko to my /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 file.
i can modprobe pcnet32 and then run /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start and my network is up but why is this not working at boot? |

ok I figured it out, I had to remove the .ko from the end of the module names in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 ! stupid newbie mistake |
