monitor problem

I am completely new to this.I searched but couldn't find an answer.I would like to use Gentoo however when I install it everything goes fine, but when it is done installing, my monitor turns on and off every 5 seconds or so.The green light stays on, but the monitor goes compltely black.it seems like power management gone nuts.it has to be something simple but since I don't know where to go to do anything,edit files check settings itis extremely dificult.Any help would be appreciated.

I found the problem for the monitor turning on and off it was the screensaver.there was a screensaver selected yet their no screensaver to select.
