I've just bought an IBM R40e laptop. I've read reports of people using 2.6 kernels on it, so it must be the kernel config.

The kernel gets past initialising the ACPI stuff, it finds the mouse, the clock, the serial ports, and then hangs on "Using anticipatory io scheduler". After advice in IRC, I mucked around with schedulers to no avail.

This has happened with 2.6.3, both off the universal livecd and my own making, and with 2.6.5 with several different configs.

So...

1) Does anybody have any quick fixes?

2) In absence of that, how can I get more info to work out what is going wrong, if I can't even load the kernel up? (I'm stuck in 2.4 atm)

edit I've tried the config I found on this page, with much the same result. It initialises a few more things to do with IDE, then I get the sheduler message, two more IO messages, and it hangs.

For the record, for anyone who encounters this problem, I eventually found the solution. I had to disable ACPI... it hangs on the processor module. See this page for more info:

You need to use the acpi=off option as acpi doesn't fully work on these laptops (dodgy IBM bios I think)
